Alma Marie Oren

January 20, 2014

Alma Marie Oren, 85, of Easton, PA passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 in Manor Care, Palmer Twp.

Born: March 24, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ she was a daughter of the late Walter Cox Gulick and Ethel May (Hooey) Gulick.

Personal: Alma and her beloved husband Walter Mills Oren were married for 64 years, 58 of which were while living in Forks Township until the passing of Walter in 2013. Alma was raised in Belvidere, NJ from age 5 until 14 by her grandparents along with 3 siblings after her parents unexpectedly died in short succession from natural causes in the early 1930’s. She always enjoyed reminiscing about the simpler times and pleasures of that period, most particularly of Sundays spent in their parlor singing songs as her grandmother played piano. In her early teens her grandparents passed away and Alma moved to Phillipsburg, NJ where she was raised by her Aunt May and Uncle Albert Hooey. She attended Phillipsburg HS until quitting to work and help support the family and remained living with her Aunt and Uncle until marrying Walter. Alma raised 3 boys and worked hard to help support the family and provide a better life for them than she had known herself. In her later years she was happy spending time with Walter and proud of all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and families.

Survivors: 3 sons: Ronald and his wife Cindi of McAfee, NJ; Rodney of Breinigsville, PA ; Rodger and his wife Mary of Nashville, TN; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday (Jan. 24) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, with visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Memorial Park.

Memorial Contributions: May be made to Meals on Wheels of Northampton County.

Dear Ronnie, Rod, and Rodger and families,
We were so sorry to read of your mother’s passing. She was such a wonderful person and always so happy. My mother remembers all the times they spent together with Walt and Tommy many years ago. Alma was truly a special person and she had such a wonderful spirit about her. We send our sincerest sympathies to you all.
    Sincerely,
    Doris Lewis and daughters

To my family and friends, it grieves me that I can’t make it to my grandmother’s service on account of my obligations to school and my residence in central Georgia. The loss took most of us by surprise and I’m still trying to grasp the fact that i’ll never hear her laugh again, or listen to one of her funny stories, or take her sound advice. I could lament over all the things that I will no longer be able to share & experience from someone who has been part of my life since its beginning. But I realize that everyday, no matter how beautiful, no matter how bright and memorable must end. As the day ends so surely do our lives, and although that is cause to mourn, it’s also cause to rejoice and to remember a full life that has enriched our own. I’m a better man today because my grandmother believed in me, and more than that she loved me, and that love shined through in all things in her life. I’ll never forget the lessons she taught me and the love she showed me, and although her life may be over the light and love she imparted will live on in my memory, and my actions as I try to live as she would have wanted. I’m going to do my best to make her proud, and no matter what you believe, or what lies beyond this life, I believe I’ll see her again.

Goodbye, for now, you’ll always live on my heart. I look forward to the day we meet again, I’m sure you’ll have some good stories for me.
