It’s hard to believe that Dr. Fried is not with us, inspiring us scientists and doctors each and every day to the intellectual and ethical pursuit of greatness. He was a treasure both as a researcher par excellence and as a human being. We will sorely miss him. Best wishes to Grace and his children. From David Mayer MD (Lafayette Classof ’70).

Prayers for your peace and comfort in the coming days.

From when I was a graduate student, budding parasitologist, and early faculty member, Bernie was always helpful, kind, and generous with his time, down-to-earth advice, and practical suggestions. He was quick to reply to a letter (and later, email), to offer short- and long-term advice, and to serve as a great example of one who was committed to both research and the teaching of undergraduates. His contributions to basic research on trematodes will outlast most of us, to be sure. I am thankful to have known him. My deep condolences on your loss.

Bernie and I crossed several research areas. We were both enthralled by turtle blood flukes and he was my entre into the wonders of Echinostoma caproni, He was a wonderful friend and a charming conversationalist. My career wouldn’t have been as successful as it was without his advice and counsel. Parasitology has lost a truly unique member of the clan.

Heartfelt condolences on the loss of Dr. Fried. He was such a good and caring soul and a wonderful role model for younger scientists at and on so many levels. I am forever in his debt and have tried my best to carry on his tradition of patience and support. He will be missed.

My sympathy and sincere condolences to Grace. Bernie was a good friend and distinguished scholar of note in the wormy world of flatworm parasites. Bestowed with kindness and intellectual drive he attracted and inspired innumerable students of science and medicine into research, publishing a prolific array of papers during his time at Lafayette College. Catching up with Bernie and Grace at ASP meetings was always an enjoyable experience for me. In many ways, his passing marks the end of an era; he will be sadly missed.

My sincerest condolences to Grace and Dr. Fried’s sons for their loss. Dr. Fried was very dear to me – my first and most important mentor. He was a gentleman and a scholar of the highest caliber who taught the most important lessons by living the example. If I have ever done anything good, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of men like Dr. Fried. His kindness, patience, caring and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Bernie Fried was a giant, not just as an academic parasitologist and gifted student-mentor, but also as a friend, husband, and father. I know that I am like so many of his students who cannot imagine the paths our lives and careers would have taken had we not been so fortunate as to encounter Bernie during our formative years. We are thinking of you, Grace, Neil, David, and Bernie.

Bernie was one of a kind, a force of nature. I will always remember our humorous conversation the day I first met him at Lafayette, and the joint projects related to my new field of epidemiology he proposed shortly after. I worked on several publications with Bernie, who was an incredible scientist, teacher and role model. His mountain of publications speaks volumes about his dedication and impact. Above all, he was a genuinely kind and nice person. Collaborating with Bernie was always a very pleasant time. Bernie, you will always be appreciated and sadly missed. I send my heartfelt condolences to Grace and his sons.

Dr Fried (Bernie) was a great trematodologist/biologist and a wonderful collaborator in research and In reporting scientific findings as an author. Both his students and fellow scientists can look to him as a model for scientific acumen and generosity, both as a person and as a scientist.

I record here the greater part of a messagwe sent to Grace Fried shortly after learing of Bernie’s death.:
Bernie was a very special guy and a very special friend. As you know, spending time with Bernie was, for me, one of the main attractions of scientific conferences. We ‘talked shop’ endlessly.. You and Mary were very tolerant about that, and you did get us to talk about other things — for a while! Bernie’s physical decline was long and slow, and that must have been hard for both of you. Mary and I send our sincere condolences. We know you will find comfort and peace in your many friendships, and in your memories of the years you and Bernie had together..

I am a Lafayette History major, class of 1977. Dr. Fried offered a course in Biology for nontechnical majors. I took this course to get a break from the reading and writing of history. I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy Dr. Fried’s course and learn things that I still use today. He was an excellent teacher and a fine example of how a brilliant biologist could make his specialty relevant to those of us who weren’t as gifted. Please accept my sympathy and condolences.

My sincere condolences to Dr. Fried’s family. Though I heard great things about Dr. Fried, unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet such a wonderful person! May his soul rest in peace.
