He was a Sergeant in the 796th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, attached to the 10th Armored Division of Patton’s Third Army in Europe. He was Chief of his battalion’s message center, which sorted and delivered mail and verbal messages and operated the cryptography machine. They participated in three major campaigns: The Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes), The Rhineland, and Central Europe. He married Marilyn in 1947, learned to ski on his honeymoon in the Canadian Laurentians, and then settled in Easton. His love of skiing started his involvement in the ski industry beginning in 1958. He was a ski patrolman at Big Boulder and Buck Hill Ski Areas, a ski instructor at Camelback Ski Area, and the Ski Patrol Leader at Timber Hill Ski Area (now Alpine Mt.). He was also president of the Poco Ski Club in Easton. As a Ski-School Supervisor at Big Boulder and Camelback Ski Areas, he earned national recognition for organizing a program, which ran from 1967 through 1980, qualifying Boy Scouts who wished to earn their Skiing Merit Badge. Within the first few years of the program, he was informed by The Boy Scouts of America that he had qualified more scouts for the skiing merit badge than any other individual in the United States and was featured in an article in Scouting Magazine in 1971. He is going to be inducted into the Pennsylvania Ski Hall of Fame later this year. From 1974 until 1980, he was also a real-estate developer and a broker at Kohler-Marvin Realty. Before retiring, he worked as the Administrative Manager for night skiing at Camelback Ski Area from 1980 to 1993.

Ronnie, My sympathy to you and your family in the loss of your father. My thoughts and prayers are with you . I walked in your shoes twice–Feb 2011 in the death of my father and Nov 2012 in the death of my mother and I know, even though a parent lives a long life, their death leaves a void that hurts. Again, I extend my deepest sympathy.

Marilyn.,
Sorry to hear that Danny passed on, but I think he is just still skiing some
white powder way out West somewhere. He’s not finished yet, he’s still
making turns coming down the slope somewhere.
Well anyway, he had a good time for 93 years while he was with us, and I hope he
just keeps on skiing into the future with the rest of us.
Condolences to the entire Hertz family,
Les —-still in Florida this season, after another 3 straight winter seasons at
Camelback.
