John W. Sullivan

John W. Sullivan, 88 of Palmer Twp., PA died Saturday, January 24, 2015 in Moravian Hall Square, Nazareth.

Born January 31, 1926 in Easton, PA he was the son of the late John B. and Helen (Hartman) Sullivan.

He received an Engineering Degree from Lafayette College in 1951 and was employed by Bethlehem Steel for 31 years before retiring in 1982 as a Metallurgical Supervisor. He was a Staff Sergeant in the 124th Cavalry during WWII serving in the China/Burma/India Theatre.

He was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Palmer Twp., where he served as Council Secretary.  He had also served as a Chair of the American Society for Metals.

John spent many enjoyable years with family and friends at their cottage on Crystal Lake, New Hampshire.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Audrey (Mertz) Sullivan; 3 children: John W. “Jack” Sullivan, II and his wife Marguerite of Lower Saucon Twp., PA, Jill Hegedus and her husband James of Phillipsburg, NJ, Jan Heim and her husband Scott of Palmer Twp., PA; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 AM Saturday (Jan.31) in St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 3900 Freemansburg Ave., Easton, PA 18045 with visitation from 10 to 11 AM in the church. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery.

Leonard L. Long

Leonard L. Long

Leonard L. Long, 95, formerly of Bangor, PA died Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Gracedale.

Born March 31, 1919 in Wilson Borough, PA, he was a son of the late Leon and Florence (Reimel) Long. His wife Elmira (Rupell) Long died in October of 2013.

He had been employed by Kepler’s Oil Company in Easton and Gulf Oil in Allentown for many years before retiring in the 1980’s. An avid camper, he was a member of the Coffeetrotters Camping Club, the Blue Ridge Pioneers Camping Chapter and the Holiday Rambler Club.  He was a WWII Army veteran and member of the American Legion, Bangor Post.

He is survived by his children: Linda Fetherman and her husband Robert of Easton, PA, Larry Long and his wife Jean of Nazareth, PA; 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his wife and 5 brothers.

Services will be 10 AM Thursday (Jan. 29)  in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA with a calling period from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday in the funeral home.  Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

Manuel Suarez

Manuel Suarez, 97, of Forks Twp., PA died Thursday, January 22, 2015 in Gracedale.

Born December 31, 1917 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he was employed by Michelin Tires and the New York Housing Authority before retiring.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Paula (Rivera) Suarez; children: Jose Suarez of Easton, PA, Sarah Adames of Tobyhanna, PA, JoAnn Licari with whom he resided; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Two children: Carlos Suarez and Isabel Pajonas died earlier.

Services will be held from 2 to 4:00 PM Saturday (Jan. 24) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA.

Joyce O. Krout

Joyce O. Krout

Joyce O. Krout, 90, of Wilson Borough, PA died Monday, January 19, 2015 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Anderson Campus.

Born August 5, 1924 in Freemansburg, PA she was a daughter of the late Charles and Helen (Rustine) Overbeck. Her husband Reuben O. Krout died in 2010.

A 1942 graduate of Wilson High School, she worked in their cafeteria for 20 years before retiring in 1986. Prior to that she was employed by Binney and Smith for 8 years.

She was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Tatamy and was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and in the Dorcas Circle at the former Memorial UCC, Wilson.

She is survived by her children: Diane O’Rorke and her husband Brian of Palmer Twp., PA, Keith Krout and his wife Janice of Pen Argyl, PA; sister: Phyllis Nolf of Palmer Twp., PA; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Reuben and brother: Glenn Overbeck.

Services will be 11 AM Saturday (Jan. 24) in Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA with a calling period  from 10 – 11 AM.  Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

John S. Holtz

John S. Holtz, 77, of Forks Twp., PA died Sunday, January 18, 2015 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Anderson Campus.

Born July 14, 1937 in Alpha, NJ he was a son of the late John and Emma (Smith) Holtz.

He had been employed by the Phillipsburg National Bank and Trust, United Trust and PNC for 44 years before retiring in 2007.  He was an army veteran and member of Phillipsburg Lodge #52, F. & A. M.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Georgia (Wyant) Holtz; children: Michael Holtz, Joan Holtz-Puglia and her husband Vincent, Jami Taranto and her husband Russell, Jodi Holtz, Mary Beth Bracken and her husband Jeff all of Easton, PA; a sister and five grandchildren: Ava, Rumer, Abigail, Rowan and Gianni. He was predeceased by a son: John Holtz.

Services will be 11 AM Thursday (Jan. 22) in College Hill Presbyterian Church, 501 Brodhead St., Easton with a calling period from 6 to 7:30 PM Wednesday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA.

Lois A. “Loie” Mengel

Lois A. “Loie” Mengel, formerly of Wilson Borough died Saturday, January 17, 2015 on her 82nd birthday in Gracedale.

Born January 17, 1933 in Easton, she was a daughter of the late Lester and Helen (Meyers) Mengel.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Nazareth.

Surviving are a sister, Delma Hulbert and her husband, Paul of Wilson Borough, two brothers, Dale Mengel and his wife, Lucille of Nazareth and Lee Mengel of Phillipsburg, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.  Three brothers and four sisters died earlier.

Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, January 21 in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.  A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until service time on Wednesday.  Interment will be in Easton Heights Cemetery.

Melvin Sussman

Melvin Sussman, 86, formerly of Easton, died Friday, January 16, 2015 in The Watermark at Logan Square nursing home, Philadelphia.

Born November 21, 1928 in the Bronx, NY, he was a son of the late Jacob and Fannie (Cohoss) Sussman.

His wife, the former Rona C. Goldfarb died in 2003.  Melvin owned and operated Craft Rug Mills.  Previously, he was a CPA and Controller for Old Town Corporation, Brooklyn; New American Library of World Literature, Inc., New York; and Random House, Inc., New York.  He graduated cum laude from City College of New York in 1949.

Surviving are a son, Michael J. Sussman and his wife, Laurie of Bethlehem; a daughter, Joan Deemer and her husband, Marvin of Easton; a sister, Sylvia Smith; five grandchildren, Jacob, Adam and Emily Sussman, Jennifer Baurle, and David Deemer; and four great grandchildren.  His sister, Shirley Youngerman died earlier.

Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 20 in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.  Interment will be in B’nai Abraham Cemetery, Forks Township.  Offer online condolences at www.AshtonFuneralHome.com.

Robert G. Vandevere

Robert G. Vandevere, 88, of Easton, died Friday, January 16, 2015 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem.

Born August 28, 1926 in Yazoo City, Mississippi, he was a son of the late John S. and Dallas (Thomas) Vandevere.

His wife, the former Anna M. Oravik died in 2012.  He served in the Marines during WWII and owned Bob’s Rubber Stamps.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Allentown.

Surviving are two sons, Robert P. Vandevere of Easton and Andrew B. Vandevere of Bethlehem, a daughter, Patricia A. Barentsen and her husband, Jack of The Netherlands, and two granddaughters.
