Dr. Reuben "Bud" E. V. Miller, Jr.

Dr. Reuben “Bud” E.V. Miller, Jr., 85, of Easton, died at home Wednesday, June 25, 2014.

Born:  January 26, 1929 in Easton, he was a son of the late Dr. Reuben E. V. Miller, Sr. and Helen (Kauffman) Miller.

Personal:  He and his wife, Nancy “Chris” Roy Lange Miller were married 39 years.  He was a dentist in the Easton area for 56 years and retired in 2009.  After retiring from his dental practice, he continued to serve as an examiner for dental and dental hygiene licensure for the North East Regional Board which encompassed 17 states.  He was a 1946 graduate of Easton High School, attended Hamilton College, Clinton, NY, and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry.  Bud was a dental officer in the Navy during the Korean War.  The Reuben E. V. Miller, Jr. Dental Clinic at The Children’s Home of Easton was dedicated in his honor in 2005.

Memberships:  He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Easton; past president of the Easton Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow; director of the Easton Hospital Dental Clinic; team dentist for the Easton Area High School varsity football team; member of the Varsity “E” Club; board member of the Weller Center for Health Education; member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Easton; past president of the Easton Dental Society and the Lehigh Valley Dental Society.

Survivors:  In addition to his wife, Chris, he is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Miller Lacey of Medford, NJ and Julianne Breiner and her husband, Ed of West Chester, PA; four sons, Drew Miller and his wife, Donna of Baltimore, MD; Thom Miller and his husband, Scott Edmiston of Waltham, MA; Ken Lange of Ambler, PA; and John Lange and his wife, Lin of Ambler, PA; a sister, Ann Louise Jaggard of Houston, TX; and twelve grandchildren.  His sister, Joyce Gilbert died earlier.

Services:  A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 28th at 11:30 am in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 330 Ferry St., Easton.  Visitation will be Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton and Saturday from 10:30 am until service time in the church.

Thomas R. Heywood

Thomas Robert Heywood, 76, of Bath, PA went home to the Lord, Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at home surrounded by his family.

Born: November 2, 1937 in Butler Twp., PA he was a son of the late Thomas B. and Grace (Davis) Heywood. He and his wife: Marguerite “Peg” (Heiser) Heywood have been married for 55 years.

Personal: He had been employed by the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. in Bethlehem for 23 years before retiring and prior to that by Western Union in Allentown for 25 years. He was a 1955 graduate of Girardville HS and had attended Penn State University, Eastern Baptist College and was an army veteran.

Memberships: He was an active member of the River of God Fellowship Church, Easton where he taught Sunday School for 38 years.

Survivors: His wife: Peg; children: Thomas D. in AZ; Stephen J. of Tatamy, PA; Mark G. and his wife Joan of Forks Twp., PA; Carol Merwarth and her husband Jon of Hanover Twp., PA; Rebecca Buschi and her husband Chris of Northampton, PA; Kristen Johnson and her husband Don of Wilson Borough, PA; a sister: Arlene Fee of Newton, NJ; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother: Glenn Heywood and sister: Joan Schneff.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday (June 28) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton with visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

John J. Groner, Jr.

June 13, 2014

John J. Groner, Jr., 90, of Palmer Twp., PA died Friday, June 13, 2014 at home.

Born: August 31, 1923 in Easton he was a son of the late John J. and Anna (Fetherolf) Groner, Sr. His wife, the former Barbara Nelson died in 2006.

Personal: He and his wife owned and operated Lafayette Cleaners on College Hill in Easton from 1948 until 1999. An army veteran, he served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII.

Survivors: Children: James, with whom he resided, John, Gabrielle and Katie; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife: Barbara and daughter: Carrie.

Services: Graveside 10 AM Saturday (6/21) in Forks Cemetery, Sullivan Trail, Stockertown. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Frederick W. Ferris

June 13, 2014

Frederick W. Ferris, 70, of Martins Creek, PA died Friday, June 13, 2014 in Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia.

Born: November 13, 1943 in Somerville, NJ he was the son of the late Walter and Pauline (Zaruka) Ferris. He and his wife, the former Sandra L. Peters have been married for 47 years.

Personal: He was a 1966 graduate of Rutgers University and served as an officer in the US Air Force  from 1966 to 1971. He had been employed by Ethicon in Somerville for more than 20 years before retiring.

Memberships: He was a member of the NRA and Treasurer of the Musconetcong Trout Club.

Survivors: His wife: Sandra; children: Jeff Ferris and his wife Robynn of Sugarloaf, PA, Michele Ferris and her wife: Laura of Macungie, PA, Aimee Lamaute and her husband Albert of Palmer Twp., PA and 7 grandchildren.

Services: 10:30 AM Thursday (6/19) in Green Pond United Methodist Church, 4411 Green Pond Road, Easton, PA with visitation 7 to 8:30 PM Wednesday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.

Chester F. Brotzman

Chester F. Brotzman, 86, of Palmer Township, died Saturday, June 7, 2014 in ManorCare, Old Orchard.

Born:  December 7, 1927 in Easton, he was a son of the late Chester, Sr. and Hazel (Gernet) Brotzman.

Personal:  He and his wife, the former Vesta M. Sandt were married 67 years.  Chester served in the Navy during WWII and was a machine operator for Ecolaire, Easton for 33 years and retired in 1986.

Memberships:  He was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Palmer Township.

Survivors:  his wife, Vesta; two sons, Chester F. Brotzman, III and his wife, Phyllis of Bethlehem and Donald R. Brotzman and his wife, Maryalice of Bethlehem; a daughter, Linda Murgia and her husband, Dominick of Swiftwater; six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.  Two sisters, Millie Hackett and Jean Daneels, and a grandson died earlier.

Services:  10:30 am Wednesday, June 11th in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton. Call from 9:30 am until service time Wednesday in the funeral home.

Ruth E. Saylor

Ruth E. Saylor, 70, of Forks Township, died Friday, June 6, 2014 in her home.

Born:  October 14, 1943 in Alpena, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Gottfried and Irene (Pajung) Lobert.

Personal:  She and her husband, Richard J. Saylor were married 51 years.

Memberships:  Ruth was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Forks Township.

Survivors:  husband, Richard; a daughter, Jill Saylor Klobe and her husband, Steve of Milton, PA; two sons, Jack Saylor of Elkton, MD and Jim Saylor and his wife, Tammi of Forks Township; and four grandchildren, Jimmy, Maia, Annalise, and Lorelei.  Two sisters, Helen Keck and Hilda Angst died earlier.

Services:  A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 9th at 11:00 am in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.

Helen V. Jeavons

Helen V. Jeavons, 91, of Easton, PA died Friday, May 30, 2014 in Gracedale.

Born: November 15, 1922 in Easton, PA she was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Fox) Schlough. Her husband William Jeavons died in 1984.

Memberships: She was a member of Emmanuel Evangelical Congregational Church, Bethlehem, PA.

Survivors: A son: Douglas Jeavons and his wife Linda, a daughter: Marcia McLean and her husband Brian all of Palmer Twp., PA; 4 grandchildren and a great-grandson. She was predeceased by her husband: William, brother: Kenneth Schlough and sister: Gladys Stem.

Services: 1:00 PM Tuesday (June 3) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton with visitation from 12 to 1:00 PM. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery.

John E. Ewadinger

May 27, 2014

John E. Ewadinger, 78 of New York City, NY formerly of Easton, PA passed away May 27, 2014 at Sloan Kettering after a gallant fight against cancer.

Born: July 10, 1935 in Easton he was a son of the late William M. and Marie (Stewart) Ewadinger.

Personal: A graduate of March Elementary School and Easton High School, he graduated from Princeton University with the Class of 1957. John was a US veteran serving as a naval medic both stateside and  overseas. When his enlistment was over, he attended Columbia University. He worked in graphic and commercial advertising in New York City. Upon retirement he remained in NY and spent summers in Toulon, France.

Memberships: He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Easton.

Survivors: He will be greatly missed by his partner of 53 years: Romuald Tecco. He is also survived by: his brother: Williams S. Ewadinger; 4 nephews and nieces: David (Gayle) Ewadinger, Susan (Mark) Critchfield, Jennifer Ewadinger and Brian Ewadinger; nine great-nieces and nephews; two great-great nephews all living in Central KY and cousins in OH, KY, PA, CA and NJ.
