Nellie Scheirer

Nellie Scheirer, 92 of Palmer Twp., PA died Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Easton Hospital.

Born: October 26, 1921 in West Easton, PA she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Martha (Hrinyak) Kopach.

Personal: She had helped her husband, Donald in his business: Scheirer Brother’s Flooring for many years. She also volunteered at Easton Hospital.

Memberships: She was a member of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, West Easton; Cosmopolitan Club; O.E.S., Easton Chapter; Nitchman Guild of Moravian Church and Ladies Auxiliary of W. Easton.

Survivors: Her sister: Catherine Kutzler of Palmer Twp., PA. She was predeceased by her husband Donald E. Scheirer in 1995 and her brother Michael Kopach in 1943.

Services: Divine Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 21) in Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church,  315  4th St., West Easton; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements. Interment will be in Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery.

Memorials: Divine Liturgy intentions in memory of Mrs. Scheirer may be made to the Church, 315  4th St., W. Easton, PA 18042.

Lois Joyce Lovell

January 13, 2014

Lois Joyce Lovell, 90, formerly of Palmer Township, died Monday, January 13, 2014.

Born:  July 27, 1923 in Easton, she was a daughter of the late Ervin R. and Elsie M. (Unangst) Worley.

Personal:  She and her husband, Robert J. Lovell were married 68 years.  Together they travelled extensively in the lower 48 states, Canada, and Alaska and enjoyed their cabin on Sand Lake in Ontario. Lois was a graduate of Easton High School.

Memberships:  She was a member of College Hill Presbyterian Church, Easton.

Survivors:  Husband, Robert; four daughters, Karen Brown and her husband, Dennis of Palmer Township, Janice Drake and her husband, Gregory of Stockertown, Sandra Goldsmith and her husband, Timothy of Palmer Township, and Lynn Johnson and her husband, Donald of Nazareth; a sister, Marion Lattig of Phillipsburg; eight grandchildren, Stacey Andreas, Mitchell Brown, Andrew, Matthew, and Peter Goldsmith, Brian Kunsman, and Bradley and Jaclyn Johnson; and five great grandchildren.  Her brother, Robert E. Worley and her sister, Olive Unangst died earlier.

Jim G. Nankin

Jim G. Nankin, 86, of Stroudsburg died Saturday, January 11, 2014 in the Easton Nursing Center.

Born: April 16, 1927 in Bulgaria, he was a son of the late George and Sophia Nankin.

Personal: He had been a house painting contractor for many years before retiring.

Survivors: Friends. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother.

Services: Will be private; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements. Interment will be in Stroudsburg Cemetery.

E. Christine Bernhard

January 10, 2014

E. Christine Bernhard, formerly of Easton, died Friday, January 10, 2014 in Gracedale.

Born: September 9, 1917 in South Hill, VA she was a daughter of the late Robert and Blanche (Crafton) Gee. Her husband Clifford D. Bernhard died in 1988.

Personal: She was employed by the Laubach and Pomroy Department Stores in Easton for many years before retiring.

Memberships: She had been a member of the former First United Methodist Church, Easton.

Survivors: Her daughter Sandra Rader and her husband Earl of Wind Gap, PA; 2 grandsons: James and Edward Rader; 4 great-grandchildren: Brittney Martin; Zachary, Dylan and Carissa Rader; and 2 great-great-grandsons: Cameron and Caleb. She was predeceased by her husband: Clifford; a sister: Ann Furr and 3 brothers: Lewis, Fred and Alton Gee.

Services: Will be held Graveside 11:30 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 15) in the Northampton Memorial Shrine, 3051 Green Pond Rd., Easton. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Kenneth Joseph Bird

Kenneth J. Bird, 89, of Palmer Twp., PA died Tuesday, January 7, 2014 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Anderson Campus.

Born: October 7, 1924 in Scranton, PA he was a son of the late William and Mary (Grady) Bird.

Personal: A 1942 graduate of Easton High School, he had been employed by Mack Printing for more than 40 years before retiring. He served in the Army during WWII and was a physical fitness nut who enjoyed tennis, bicycling and walking.

Memberships: He was a member of the Fleas Club and 26 year volunteer for Meals on Wheels.  

Survivors: His wife of 62 years, the former Marian Cawley; 4 daughters: Louise B. Mease and her husband Wayne D. of Canadensis, PA; Eleanor B. Neff and her husband Chuck of Cape May Court House, NJ; Donna Jean Lederer and her husband Ron of Danielsville, PA; Eileen A. Lewis and her husband William of Northampton, PA; a sister: Dorothy Potteiger of Palmer Twp., PA; 6 grandchildren: Molly and Rachel Lederer; Benjamin and Mandy Mease; Matthew and Amy Neff; and 2 great-grandchildren: Leah Dorney and Jase Lederer. He was predeceased by a sister: Evelyn Rossi.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 11) in St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 3900 Freemansburg Avenue, Easton, with visitation from 10:30 to 11 in the church. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Sherry Jean Lawson Manigo

Sherry Jean Lawson Manigo, 33, of Easton died Sunday, January 5, 2014 in the VNA of St. Luke’s Hospice House.

Born: July 23, 1980 in Abington, PA she was a daughter of Morris and Rose (Lawson) Johnson with whom she resided.

Personal: She was employed by Burger King in Easton for several years.

Memberships: She was a member of the former Legacy Ministries congregation in Easton.

Survivors: Her parents; children: DaShawn, Isaiah, Nitisha, Dynasty; and siblings: Morris and Dawn Lawson; John, James, Kristel, Rose and Amanda Johnson.

Services: A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday (Jan. 10) in Open Bible Fellowship Church, 1400 Lehigh St., Easton. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements

Shirley Lorraine Beck Dutt

January 5, 2014

Shirley Lorraine Beck Dutt, 81, of Easton, passed peacefully into her eternal home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, January 5, 2014 in Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest.

Born: A daughter of the late Stewart and Lottie Beck, she was born and raised in Wallenpaupack Village, Hawley, PA. She graduated with high honors from Moravian College in 1954 and has lived in Easton since then.

Personal: Known to her family as Emmy and Mazdie, Shirley was love personified. She had an endless supply of smiles, hugs, love and encouragement for everyone she met. A loving and devoted wife and mother, a beam of sunshine and a devout Christian, she brightened the world and will be sorely missed.  

Memberships: Shirley was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem for 60 years.

Survivors: Her loving husband of 56 years: Karl; daughters: Janna and Lisa; son: Andrew; brother: Warren Beck; and four grandsons: Karl, Joey, Theo and Ian. She was predeceased by her brothers: Merrill, Theodore, Franklin, Elbert, Blaine and Richard Beck.

Services:   A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, March 1st at 2:00 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, 2344 Center Street, Bethlehem with a reception to follow. Shirley was laid to rest in a private family service at Easton Cemetery in January. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton handled the arrangements.

Robert A. Snyder

January 4, 2014

Robert A. Snyder, 88, of Forks Township, died Saturday, January 4, 2014 in Gracedale.

Born:  August 31, 1925 in Easton, he was a son of the late Charles and Mabel (Troxell) Snyder.

Personal:  His wife, the former Frances A. Wallace died in June, 2013.  “Rigger” was a Merchant Marine during WWII, a smokejumper, an ironworker, and a superintendent at Pocono Raceway.  He retired from Baker Chemical.

Survivors:  A daughter, Bonny Kitson and her husband, Larry, of Forks Township; a son, Glen Snyder and his wife, Kelly, of Saylorsburg; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  Three sisters and a brother died earlier.

Services:  A visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm Tuesday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.  Services and interment will be private.
