Marion C. Wagner

July 27, 2023

Marion C. Wagner, 96, of Palmer Township died Thursday, July 27, 2023 in St. Luke’s Hospital. Born October 30, 1926 in St. Louis, MO, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Henry and Clara Gertrude (Luecke) Horn. Her husband, Marvin L. Wagner died in 1990. Marion was a member of the Women’s Board of Easton Hospital and a volunteer in the gift shop. Before becoming a mother, she worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, St. Louis, MO. Her greatest joy was caring for her family. She was an excellent cook, an accomplished seamstress, and an avid equestrian.

Surviving are three daughters, Cathy Rosenblatt and her husband, Eric, of Bethlehem, PA, Nancy Stevenson of San Diego, CA, and Lynn Wagner of Denver, CO; and two grandchildren, Amanda Stevenson of San Diego, CA and Sean Stevenson of San Diego, CA.

Faith H. Shireman

Faith (Harding) Shireman died July 27, 2023 at Moravian Hall Square, aged 97. She was born in Pen Argyl, PA on August 18, 1925, the daughter of Mamie Hahn and Ralph Harding. She moved to Easton after graduating from Pen Argyl High School, but not before she was counted among the “Fairest” young women featured in Homefront. She was also active in the Glee Club, Drum Majorettes, and the Tri-Hi-Y.

After she graduated from Churchman’s Business College, she was a legal secretary for Fox & Oldt. She also joined the Easton Art League where she met her future husband, Woodrow E. Shireman. When Woody died in 2008, they’d been married for almost 55 years.

Her two brothers, Merrill H. Harding and Leroy G. Harding, also predeceased her.

She is survived by three children: son Jonathan (Patricia Harstine), and daughters Stephanie (Robert Boenau) and Melinda (Bryan Statler), as well as two beloved grandsons, Ajen (Sarah Robinson) and Kylan; and great-grandson, Maxwell, and great-granddaughter, Cadence.

She was active in many community organizations, including Great Books and Great Discussions, the Children’s Home and Auxiliary, the Junior Service League, LePoCo, League of Women Voters, and the ProJeCt adult literacy program. But closest to her heart were the long-running Book Group she joined in 1953, and Lehigh Valley Friends Meeting (Quaker).

She loved swimming in the Delaware, hiking up Hawk Mountain, and camping in the Poconos. She was also an avid reader, gardener, birdwatcher, and an excellent cook.

Most of all, no one can forget her passionate support for equal rights, her wonderful sense of humor, and her magical, musical laugh.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Lehigh Valley Friends Meeting House, 4116 Bath Pike, Bethlehem.  Interment will be private at Fairview Cemetery, Pen Argyl.  The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling arrangements.

Contributions in her memory can be made to any equal justice or environmental cause.

Bernard S. Leonard

July 26, 2023

Bernard S. Leonard, 99, formerly of Bethlehem, Franklin Square, NY, Chester, NY, and West Palm Beach, FL, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 in Weston Care Center, Hellertown. Born September 4, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Samuel and Yette (Shapiro) Cohen. His wife, Judith I. (Levine) Leonard passed away in 2014. Bernard served in the Army during WWII where he played drums in the Army Air Force Band. He was a co-owner of Arrow Interiors, Queens, NY, a professional drummer, and an avid Mets fan.

Surviving are his children, Caren Leonard and her husband, Peter Holderith, Gary Leonard, and Amy Schupp and her husband, Albert; and three grandchildren, Philip, Julian, and Rebecca.

Services will be private with interment in Forks Cemetery. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements. Robert J. Oppen

Robert J. Oppen, 79, of White Township, NJ, died Monday, July 24, 2023 in St. Luke’s Hospital. Born March 18, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Walter and Barbara (Meigs) Oppen. He and his wife, Laura (Numann) Oppen were married 56 years. Robert was a lead mechanic for United Airlines in Newark, NJ. He received a Regents Diploma from Manhasset High School and was a graduate of Teterboro School of Aeronautics. He was a member of Summerfield United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee. He was a Scoutmaster for Troop #146, White Township and a member of the Board of Directors of the Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club–W30K. He was also a member of the International Association of Machinists, IAM Local Lodge 914, where he was a Conductor Sentinel, and Lobbyist.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Laura, are his daughter, Carol Lowry; two sons, Joseph Bruce Campo and Dale Ashley Campo; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. A brother, Walter Oppen and a granddaughter died earlier.

Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, July 28, 2023 in Summerfield United Methodist Church with a visitation from 2:00 to 3:00 pm on Friday in the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Painesville, OH. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements. Caroline B. Reed

Caroline B. Reed, 75, of Easton, died Monday, July 24, 2023 in her home. Born June 23, 1948 in Newton, NJ, she was the daughter of the late John T. Reed, Sr. and the former Sealie Kinney. Caroline worked at the Hunterdon Developmental Center until retiring in 2011 and she was a member of Legacy Ministries, Easton.

Surviving are a son, Daniel L. Lucas, Sr. and his wife, Julia; a brother, George Reed; a sister, Terri Suydam; three grandchildren, Daniel, Jr., Jacob, and Kaylee; and eight great grandchildren. A son, Louis J. Lucas, Sr.; a daughter, Kelli Lucas; three brothers, Robert Reed, John Reed, Jr., and Harold Reed; and two grandsons, Louis, Jr. and Jack died earlier.

Services will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 27, 2023 in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton with a visitation from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday in the funeral home. Kevin W. Kutzler, Jr.

Kevin W. Kutzler, Jr., 38, of Cherry Tree, PA, died Monday, July 24, 2023. Born January 24, 1985 in Waynesboro, PA, he was a son of Lisa D. (Nunemaker) Kutzler and Kevin W. Kutzler, Sr. He was employed as a truck driver by Smith Transport. Kevin served in the US Army from 2003 to 2013 with the 2nd Squadron, 104th Cavalry Regiment. He was deployed to Iraq in January 2009 and was a Seargent stationed at FOB Taji, Iraq and JSS Sheik Amir, Iraq. He was also deployed to aid with Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Hurricane Sandy in New York. Kevin participated in Marines Helping Marines fishing tournaments and was a hunting and fishing enthusiast.

Surviving with his parents are his wife, Ashlee; his children, Chase Kutzler, Mackenzy Kutzler, Kevin Kutzler, III, Luna Kutzler, Layla Lynch, and Lincoln Richmond; two brothers, Kory Kutzler and his wife, Meghan and Kyler Kutzler; his grandfather, Lee Nunemaker; and his nephews and niece, Kole, Kingston, and Kinslee.

Peter S. Zavitsanos

Peter S. Zavitsanos

Peter Socrates Zavitsanos, 97 of Wilson Borough, PA died Monday, July 17, 2023 at home. Born September 30, 1925 in Newport News, VA, he was the son of the late Socrates and Angelica (Xanthopoulos) Zavitsanos. He attended schools in Newport News, the College of Hampton Roads, William and Mary and the Air Mechanic School in NC. He served in the Army Air Force 730th Air Warning Co., China, Burma, India during WWII, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon and WWII Victory Ribbon. Peter retired from Northampton County as a Correctional Officer in 1991. Prior to that he was employed by MC Riccardi Co., Ingersoll-Rand and the Navy Hydro Graphic Office in MD. He was a life member of American Legion, Post 9, Citizen’s Hose, VFW Post 4366, and the Wilson Republican Club. Pete was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Wilson where he served as Secretary on the Board of Trustees and was a life member and past president of Eastonia Chapter 56, Order of AHEPA serving as its secretary since 1954.

He is survived by his daughters: Katherine Vayda (James Vannatta) of Williams Twp., PA, Athena Gilio (Michael Gilio) of Breinigsville, PA; 3 grandchildren: Melissa Tripp (Christopher Tripp), David Gilio and Christopher Gilio; and 3 great-grandchildren: Christopher, Matthew and Dominic. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Xanthe (Karanikas) in 2016 and his sister Katherine Pappas.

Services are 1 PM Saturday (July22) in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 319 S. 20th St., Easton, with visitation noon to 1 PM in the church. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton, PA is handling arrangements. Sally Marie Solis

Sally Marie Solis, 86 of Mt. Pocono, PA died Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Gardens for Memory Care at Easton, PA. Born January 30, 1937 in East Stroudsburg, PA she was the daughter of the late Anna (Shekmer) and Arthur Dunlap, Jr. Sally was one of 5 children including brothers: Joe, Tom, Bill and Mike Dunlap and was employed in the garment industry for many years.

She is survived by her daughter: Leslie Lindsey (husband Dennis) of Mt. Pocono; and grandchildren: Dennis Lindsey and Becky Ripley. Sally was predeceased by her husband Nicolas Solis.
