MARION HANCE SLATER, beloved mother and grandmother and a lifelong Lehigh Valley resident, died on March 19, 2013 aged 97.
In 1939 she married Arthur James Nolan (1908-65) of New York City, a Vice President of Easton’s Dixie Cup Company. Their elder son, Terence Nolan (1931-98) was graduated from Lafayette College and became a principal at Morgan Stanley, later forming his own NYC investment firm; he and his first wife Elizabeth had two children: Christopher, who now lives in Ridgefield, CT with wife Carolyn and children Morgan and Ian, and Hilary, who lives in Norfolk, MA with husband Don Cohen and her son Patrick. A second son, Barry Nolan (1942-2009), was graduated from Princeton and Columbia Business School and became president of Current, Inc., and later of the USGA’s catalog business. He left a daughter Tracy (Mrs. Ian) Owens of Arvada, CO and their son Ian, and, by a second marriage to Catherine McDermott, who survives, a son Craig Nolan of San Francisco and a daughter Kelsey of Colorado Springs. Marion’s third child, Sheila (Mrs. Robert F.) Fuller, a graduate of Sweet Briar College, lives in retirement with husband Bob at The Loxahatchee Club in Jupiter, FL and in Greenwich, CT. By an earlier marriage she has a son, Andy Mensing of San Diego, CA and a daughter Allison (Mrs. James) Corbett, of Cohasset, MA, and grandson Grayson and granddaughter Riley; and Sheila has also acquired step-daughter Julie Fuller (Mrs. James Thornton) and step-son Gordon Fuller as well as five step-grandchildren.
Following Arthur’s death Marion married Charles Slater, also of Easton, thereby gaining a second family comprising Charles Slater, Jr., and his sister Sue Kristoff and her husband Frank.
A 1931 graduate of Easton High School, she was graduated from Northfield School, Northfield, MA. A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Easton, Marion worked in its office for some years, and also served on the Board of the Easton YWCA. Her passion for golf, which she passed on to her three children, earned her the title of Ladies Champion of Harker Hollow Golf Club at age 24 and the three-time Ladies Championship at the Northampton County Club. She also had a deep appreciation for music: following her move to Kirkland Village in 1997she led its Music Committee, bringing to it local entertainment talent.
Marion’s strength in the face of life’s challenges, her sense of humor, and her wisdom have set an example for her extended family and friends that will not be forgotten while they live.
