Marybelle A. Sales

Marybelle A. Sales, 89, of Moravian Village, formerly of Easton died Monday, October 24, 2011.

Born: August 26, 1922 in Raleigh, NC she was a daughter of the late Dr. Rayford and Marybelle King Adams. Her husband Thomas D. Sales, Sr. died in 2007.

Personal: She was a graduate of Somerville High School and Duke University in 1944.

Memberships: She was a member of Palmer Moravian Church, Palmer Twp. and very active in the Choir, Sunday School, Women’s Fellowship and Church Women United. A member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, she remained active as the oldest member of their local chapter. 

Survivors: son: Thomas D. Sales, Jr. and his wife Charlene of McKinney, TX; daughters: Mary Elizabeth Hyde and her husband Stephen of Long Beach, CA; Anne S. McGahan and her husband John of S. Boston, MA; 7 grandsons and a great-grandson. She was predeceased by siblings: Rayford Adams, Jr. and Elizabeth Stryker.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday in the church, 2901 John St., Palmer Twp. with a calling period from 10 to 11a.m. in the church.  Interment will be private.

Edward E. Richards

October 20, 2011

Edward E. Richards, 88, of St. Petersburg, FL and Easton, PA died Thursday, October 20, 2011 in Bayfront Hospital,St. Petersburg.

Born: November 21, 1922 in Easton he was a son of the late Roy and Irene Krueger Richards. He and his wife, the former Elvera V. Wagner have been married for 68 years.

Personal: A 1941 graduate of Easton High School, he served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was the Vice President of the Donald Tinsman Food Brokerage firm. An avid baseball fan, he started and coached the Stockertown baseball team and also coached for the Nazareth Junior Legion.

Memberships: He was a very active member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in St. Petersburg and had been a Sunday School teacher at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Nazareth.

Survivors: His wife: Elvera; sons: Ronald and his wife Diana of Mt. Dora, FL; Curt and his wife Elayna of Palmyra, PA; daughter: Cheryl and her husband Ray Yowell of Louisa, VA; 2 brothers: Dick and Arnold, both of Easton; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother: Lloyd and sister: Thelma Smith.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, with a calling period from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will be in Hays Cemetery, Easton.

Arnold J. “Arnie” Pessin

Arnold J. “Arnie” Pessin, 85, of Port Orange, FL, formerly of Bethlehem Township, PA, died Thursday, October 20, 2011 in Florida.

Born: November 2, 1925 in New York City, NY, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mollie (Davis) Pessin.

Personal: His wife, the former Elizabeth G. “Betty” Rinker died in 2009. He graduated from Easton High School in 1944 and served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.  For over 20 years he was a sales representative for Levitz Furniture, Whitehall and retired in the 1990’s.

Memberships: He was a member of Temple Israel, Daytona Beach, FL.

Survivors: Two daughters, Debra Pessin of Arizona and JoLynne “Jody” Brazzo and her husband, Paul of Allentown; two step-children, Charmaine Silfies and her husband, Richard of Port Orange, FL and Ronald Walters and his wife, Kathy of Royersford, PA; a brother, Herbert Pessin and his wife, Jo-anne of Kennett Square, PA; a sister, Henrietta Pessin of Wilson Borough; five grandsons and several great grandchildren.

Services: 2:00 pm Wednesday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton. Interment with military honors at Northampton Memorial Shrine.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, 3893 Adler Place, Bethlehem, PA 18017.

Edith F. Serfass

October 20, 2011

Edith Frances Serfass, 94, went to join her husband on Thursday, October 20, 2011. She was one of fourteen children of the late Louis and Grace Pacchioli. Her husband William died Sept. 25, 1989.

Personal: She worked for 25 years for the Wilson Boro Police Department as a Meter Maid and was a crossing guard for St. Jane’s Catholic School. Prior to that she worked 24 years as an Assistant Manager for S&H Green Stamps. She and her husband also operated the Serfass Gulf Station for many years on Butler Street. She enjoyed and loved spending time with her family and friends and loved to entertain on the holidays. Some of her favorite pastimes were bingo, reading and card club with her closest friends. She also enjoyed boating on the weekends with her family.

Survivors: We have lost a wonderful mother and grandmother and were blessed to have her. She was a hard working and loving mother to her daughter: Barbara Macaluso of Nazareth; three sons: William of Minersville; James of Bethlehem Twp.; Richard and Mary Jo of Emmaus; grandchildren: Tracy and Tom Phillips, Tammy Weaver, Jim, Megan, Patrick, Michael and Maria Serfass, Heather and Jack Maginn, Kadie and Eric Smith, Lisa Bertschman; and great-grandchildren: Patrick and Lauren Phillips, Rylie and Lily Maginn, Kayla and Madison Serfass.

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, 4049 Hartley Ave., Easton with viewing hours from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton and 10 to 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Church. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

Marilyn Lightcap

Marilyn Lightcap, 51, of Palmer Township, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in VNA Hospice of St. Luke’s.

Born: June 15, 1960 in Easton, she was a daughter of the late Carl F. and Grace E. (Young) Lightcap.

Personal: She had worked at Boscov’s and Bon Ton.

Survivors: A brother, Allen Lightcap of Palmer Township.

Services: Services will be private. The Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton is handling the arrangements.

Memorials: Contributions may be made to the family in care of the funeral home.

Norman R. Rothrock, Sr.

October 15, 2011

Norman R. Rothrock, Sr. 94, of Palmer Township died Saturday, October 15, 2011 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Langhorne, PA.

Born: September 4, 1917 in Bangor, he was a son of the late Samuel and Ruth (Houck) Rothrock.

Personal: His wife, the former Marion B. Weiland died in 2002.  He was a self-employed house painter in the Easton area and was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Easton.

Survivors: two sons, Norman R. Rothrock, Jr. of Levittown, PA and David R. Rothrock of Jersey Shore, PA; a sister, Marion Moyer; 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A sister, Arlene Jarrell-Franco died earlier.

Services: 11:00 am Tuesday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton. Call from 10:00 am until service time Tuesday in the funeral home.

Curtis L. Zellner

October 13, 2011

Curtis L. Zellner, 82, of Palmer Twp., died Thursday, October 13, 2011 in Easton Hospital.

Born: April 18 1929 in Germansville, PA, he was a son of the late Elmer and Naomi Heil Zellner.

Personal: He and his wife, the former Betty Jane Kemp, had been married for 63 years. He was employed by Riegel Paper in Milford, NJ for almost 40 years before retiring in 1991, and had been their shop steward. A die hard Phillies fan, he also loved bowling and gardening. He was a 1947 graduate of Slatington High School.

Memberships: He was a member of the Future Farmers of America.

Survivors: His wife, Betty Jane; four children, Nancy of Easton, Roger of Palmer Twp., Melody Heidman of Plainfield Twp, Curtis Jr. of Allentown; a brother, Erwin of Slatington; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Herman.

Services: Visitation will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 14th and Northampton Sts., Easton. Interment will be private.

Memorial Contributions: May be made to a Veteran s charity of one s choice.

Barbara J. Shimer

October 10, 2011

Barbara J. Shimer, 75, of Wilson Borough died Monday, October 10, 2011 at Gracedale.

Born: January 15, 1936 in Easton she was the daughter of the late Harold and Ethel Case Rhymer. She and her husband Alan Shimer have been married for 55 years.

Personal: She was a graduate of Wilson High School (1953) and the Easton Hospital School of Nursing. She had been employed by Drs. Kovar, Korhammer and Plano for many years before retiring.

Memberships: She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilson where she was an officer of WELCA; member of the Elizabeth Circle and served on the Altar Guild and Evangelism and Visitation Committees. She was a Past Matron of Easton Chapter #214, Order of the Eastern Star and a Safe Harbor volunteer.

Survivors: Her husband: Alan; son: David A. and his wife Karen of Nazareth; Daughters: Lynda A. Hower of Wilson Borough; Susan F. Limeberry and her husband Craig of Forks Twp.; 7 grandchildren: Ed and Rebecca Griffin; Craig, Jr., Tyler and Brooke Limeberry; Alan Shimer and Lauren Pysher. She was predeceased by her brother: Vernon Rhymer.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 14th and Northampton Sts., Easton with a visitation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.  Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.
