Lucille M. Cherry

Lucille Marguerite Fredericks Cherry, 99 of Easton, PA entered eternal rest Friday, February 28, 2020 at Easton Hospital. Born October 15, 1920 in Plainfield, NJ she was a daughter of the late James and Floretta (Ryerson) Fredericks and foster daughter of the late Clyde and Jennie Brown. She grew up in Alpha, NJ and graduated from Phillipsburg High School. She received her Registered Nurse diploma from Lincoln School for Nurses in the Bronx and was an RN at several hospitals in NY before moving to Easton. She retired from Easton Hospital as the Assistant Director of Nursing after 35 years of employment. Lucille was active in many civic organizations and honored in the 1979/80 Who’s Who of American Women. As a cancer survivor, she was prompted to write a book, ”No Tea for the Fever” chronicling her life. Her loving husband of 58 years, Charles Clarence Cherry died in 2006.

She leaves to mourn her loss, two daughters: Denise Cherry with whom she resided, Darlene Cherry of Palm Coast, FL; two sisters: Emily Barnes of Orlando, FL, Dolores Caul of Easton; a host of nieces, nephews and great-nieces/ nephews.

Services are 9:30 AM Friday (March 6) in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 330 Ferry St., Easton, PA with visitation from 9 to 9:30 AM in the church. Richard J. “Dick” Hunt

Richard J. “Dick” Hunt, 83, of Country Meadows, formerly of Bethlehem Township, died Thursday, February 27, 2020 in Sacred Heart Hospital.

Born March 16, 1936 in Easton, he was a son of the late William A. Hunt and Kathryn (Smith) VanNorman. His wife, Claudette (Wolfinger) Hunt died in 2015.

Dick worked at ALPO Pet Food, Allentown for over 20 years and retired in 1995. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of Green Pond United Methodist Church, served as a Supply Pastor in the Lehigh Valley and was an avid Penn State football fan.

Surviving are his sons, Robert Hunt and his wife, Suzanne, of Effort and James Hunt of Nazareth; two sisters, Vickie Hegyi and her husband, Frank, of Lehighton and Kathy Evans and her husband, John, of Easton; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. His daughter, Wendy Wright and his brother, Donald Hunt, died earlier.

Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 6, 2020 in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton. A visitation will be held from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm on Friday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

Carl Merwarth

Carl Merwarth, 101, of Palmer Twp., PA died Sunday, February 23, 2020 at ManorCare, Easton. Born September 24, 1918 in Easton, PA he was a son of the late Albert and Daisy (Kline) Merwarth. His wife, the former Helen (Worman) Werkiser Merwarth died in 2001. He was a 1936 graduate of Easton High School and retired from the Aqua Water Co. in 1971 after 41 years of employment. Carl was a member of the Promised Land Church of Nazarene, Bethlehem.

He is survived by sons: Richard Merwarth (wife Maureen) of Huron, OH, Robert Werkiser (wife Diane) with whom he resided; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Five sisters and a brother died earlier.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 7 at 11 AM in the Promised Land Church of the Nazarene, 3982 Hecktown Rd., Bethlehem, PA. Interment will be Friday, March 6 at 11 AM in Easton Heights Cemetery, N. 10th St., Easton. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling arrangements.

Richard S. Jacoby

Richard S. Jacoby, 75, of Northampton, died Wednesday, February 12, 2020 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Muhlenberg.

Born December 12, 1944 in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Charles and Stephania (Kolakowski) Jacoby. He and his wife, Marylou (Clancy) Jacoby, were married 54 years. He served in the Coast Guard during the Vietnam War and worked for Houghton International Oils and Chemicals for 40 years and retired in 2006.

Surviving with his wife, Marylou, are four children, Monica Harris and her husband, Stephen, Richard Jacoby and his fiancé, Donna Gaetaniello, Christopher Jacoby and his wife, Michelle Giaquinto-Jacoby and Andrew Jacoby and his wife, Rachel; two sisters, Eileen Blaess and her husband, George and Claire Jacoby; and six grandchildren, Anthony, Aidan, Ryan, Chase, Na’Lani and Isabella.

Services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 7, 2020 in Queenship of Mary Church, 1324 Newport Ave., Northampton. A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 am on Saturday in the church. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Evangleine "Vangie" Sweitzer

Evangeline “Vangie” Sweitzer, 87 formerly of Palmer Twp., PA passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem. Born July 11, 1932 in Newark, NJ she was the fourth daughter of the late Rev. Ralph Russell Roby and Mary Spencer Roby. Vangie’s varied careers included 25 years in radio, first with the faculty of her alma mater, Centenary College, then with various Lehigh Valley radio stations including WEST, WEEX and WKAP. She was a substitute teacher (K-8) in the Pohatcong and Phillipsburg School Districts for eight years. She retired in 1994 as Associate Director of the Bethlehem Area Chamber of Commerce, where she enjoyed seven fulfilling years. She retired a final time after two years as Historic Bethlehem Partnerships’ first public relations coordinator.

As a volunteer, she gave a lifetime of service to her churches, Wesley United Methodist Church, Phillipsburg, and since 1991, Central Moravian Church, Bethlehem. An active member of Minsi Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America for 24 years, Vangie earned the Silver Beaver award, a Scout Council’s highest honor, and was one of the first group of females inducted into the Order of the Arrow. She was in the second class of Cub Scout Trainers’ Wood Badge offered in the NE United States and served on staff several times. Vangie wrote and organized weekend training courses at Camp Minsi for leaders from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

A writer for most of her life, she was author of three books on Bethlehem Moravian church history. The first, Christmas in Bethlehem – A Moravian Heritage, has been a consistent best seller. She was an avid gardener, caring for their three acres with her husband. Over past years, Vangie served on the Board of Directors of Minsi Trails Council, BSA; Executive Service Corps of the Lehigh Valley; Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society; Historic Bethlehem; and the Board of Elders, Central Moravian Church. She was the first female chairman of the Board of Trustees, Wesley Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years: Donald Laros Sweitzer; son: Mark A. Sweitzer and wife Elizabeth of Spring City, PA; two grandchildren: Maxwell Laros Sweitzer and Kathryn Grace Sweitzer; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters: Mary Trotter, Elizabeth Brown and Ellen “Bobbie” Diehl.

Services are 10 AM Monday (Feb. 10) in Central Moravian Church, 7 W. Church St., Bethlehem, PA; with visitation from 5 PM to 6:30 PM Sunday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA. Interment: Northampton Memorial Shrine. Blythe M. Macaluso

Blythe M. Macaluso, 96 of Raubsville, PA died Monday, February 3, 2020 at home. Born in Phillipsburg, NJ, she was employed by Fredwell Industries in Easton for more than 25 years before retiring.

She is survived by her daughter: Roxane Giordano with whom she resided; her son: Joseph Macaluso (wife Beverly) of Raubsville; a sister: Betty Tucker of Largo, FL; 7 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Macaluso, her son Robert Macaluso and 3 sisters.

Frances W.P. “Kris” Gallup

Frances Webster Platt “Kris” Gallup, 91 of Bethlehem, PA died Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Kirkland Village, Bethlehem. Born July 17, 1928 in New Brunswick, NJ she was a daughter of the late Mildred (Webster) and Clarence S. Platt. She was a graduate of Westtown School and Douglass College, and had been employed by Head Start in Easton for many years. Kris lived her life as a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), first with the Plainfield NJ Meeting and later with the Lehigh Valley Meeting. She was also a longtime volunteer at the Senior Center in Easton.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Howard F. Gallup; 2 sons: Joshua S. Gallup (wife Josie) of Berkeley, CA, Bradford K. Gallup (wife Lei) of El Cerrito, CA; 4 grandchildren: Jason, Eli, Noah, Nate; and 5 great-grandchildren: Haley, Blue, Grace, Claire and Leo. She was predeceased by her daughter: Sharrene P. Gallup in 1974 and sisters: Helen Hollingsworth and Margaret Horvath.

Carla Jo Sobler

Carla Jo Sobler, 68 of Palmer Twp., PA died Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at home. Born January 19, 1952 in Flemington, NJ she was a daughter of the late Lillian (Stymiesc) and Carl H. Moyer, Jr. She was a graduate and avid fan of Phillipsburg High School where she had been named Susie Stateliner. A member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, she was active with SAW (St. Andrew’s Women) and sang in the choir. Carla will be remembered for her infectious laugh and ability to engage in conversation with anyone.

She is survived by her sons: Benjamin C. Sobler (wife Stephanie) of Wilson Borough, Andrew K. Sobler of Palmer Twp.; sisters: Dawn G. Moyer of Easton, Linda Moyer-Hall of Bethlehem, PA; 3 granddaughters: Emma, Ella, Edith; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband Michael D. Sobler in 2000.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 AM Friday (Jan. 31) in St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 3900 Freemansburg Ave., Easton; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling arrangements.
