Mary T. Bennett

Mary T. Bennett, 92, of Palmer Township passed away peacefully September 15, 2014 at Old Orchard Health Care Center.  Born September 7, 1922 in Wilson Borough, she was the daughter of the late Arthur W. and Edith (Johnson) Trach.

She was a faithful member of New Creation United Church of Christ, Palmer Township (formerly Memorial United Church of Christ, Wilson Borough).  She served on the church consistory and on various committees throughout the years.

Mary was employed by Bean, Inc. Excavating Contractor, Wilson Borough for 45 years.  She served for many years as treasurer for the Wilson Borough High School Class of 1940.  Mary volunteered for Meals on Wheels of Northampton County.

She is survived by her son Robert E. Bennett and his wife Barbara of Bath;  grandchildren, Heather Bennett Knerr and husband Lowell of Northampton, and Robert E. Bennett, III and wife Holly of Nazareth; great grandchildren Sydney, Nicholas, Ezekiel and Delaney;  her sister Dorothy Weisel of Palmer Township; and one niece and three nephews.  She was predeceased by her brother, William Trach.

Steven C. Sandy

Steven C. Sandy

Steven C. Sandy, 71, of Easton, PA passed away due to complications associated with dementia on Sunday, September 14, 2014. Born in Carl Junction, MO on September 28, 1942, he was the son of Herbert and Marguerite (Milleson) Sandy and the youngest of four siblings.

Steven graduated from Joplin Junior College in 1962 and went on to attend the University of Alabama for his undergraduate studies and the University of Southern California for post-graduate work. Upon graduating from USC in 1966 he was hired by Ingersoll Rand and worked in Los Angeles, San Francisco and the United Kingdom before settling in the Lehigh Valley and eventually becoming the President of Ingersoll Rand’s Pump Group.

At various points, he served as Chairman of the Valve Manufacturers Association and a Director of the Hydraulic Institute. After breaking away from Ingersoll Rand in 1990 (he was featured in a Fortune magazine cover story on the subject), he presided over Gimple Corporation in Langhorne, PA before co-founding Gateshead Partners, a private investment group, in Doylestown, PA.

An avid tennis player, biker and skier, Steven was passionate about fitness and the outdoors, enjoying long walks and traveling with his wife, Denise. He adamantly cheered on the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers and Penn State Nittany Lions. A wine connoisseur and collector, he often had trouble drinking his prized wines himself, but was never abstemious when it came to sharing vintage Bordeauxs among family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Denise (Ahlum) Sandy of Easton, PA; son, Matthew Sandy of Denver, CO and sisters Lilly Mae Ash, Audrey Ward and Jeanette Verbryck of Carl Junction, MO.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday (Sept. 19) in Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte Hill, Bethlehem, PA with a calling period from 1 to 2 PM in the church. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Valley, PA. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton, PA is handling the arrangements.

Jacqueline A. Young

Jacqueline A. Young, 79, of Easton, PA died Sunday, September 14, 2014 in Saucon Valley Manor, Hellertown, PA.

Born October 6, 1934 in Easton, PA she was a daughter of the late Joseph Reihl and Anne (Nodoline) Reihl Kramer.  She was a graduate of Easton High School and had been employed by Mack Printing for 25 years before retiring.

She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Easton.

Survivors:  Her children: Nancy Deutsch of Palmer Twp., PA, Mark and his husband C.J. of Ocean Grove, NJ, Nathan in CA, a sister: Gail McGinnis in SC; PA; half-brothers; and three grandchildren: Joseph and Allison Deutsch and Matthew Young, Jr. She was predeceased by her husband Lester in 2005 and son Matthew in 2004.

Services: Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 20) in the Church, (St. Joseph’s parish) 139 Davis St., Easton; with a calling period from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA. Interment will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Palmer Twp., PA.

Memorial Contributions: May be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

C. Edwin Jackson

September 11, 2014

Charles Edwin Jackson, 89, formerly of Bangor, PA died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 in Manor Care Health Services, Palmer Twp., PA.

He was born June 5, 1925 in Summit, NJ the son of the late Thomas and Blanche (Emmons) Jackson.

He was a graduate of Madison HS, Madison, NJ, Maryville College and Crozer Seminary. He served in the Air Force during WWII and was ordained in the Presbyterian ministry in 1960.

Survivors:  He is survived by two sisters: Grace Baldwin of Hummelstown, PA and Carol Smith of Williamsburg, VA; nieces and nephews.

Services: Will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 16) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA, with visitation from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Chester, NJ.

Catherine E. Baylog

Catherine E. Baylog

Catherine Ellen Baylog, 85, of Forks Twp., PA died Wednesday, September 10, 2014 in Alexandria Manor, Bath, PA.

Born May 30, 1929 in Wilson Borough, PA she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Kula (Stofflet) Daws. Her husband Joseph Baylog, Jr. died in May of this year.

She graduated from Wilson High School in 1947 and received her Bachelor’s degree from Moravian College. She had been employed by the Northampton County Dept. of Aging for more than 15 years as a Caseworker and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Easton and the Delaware Canoe Club. Catherine will be fondly remembered as a wonderful mother, sister, and friend. She enjoyed nature, reading and spending time with family.

Survivors: She is survived by three children: Alice Van Horn of Hunter, NY, Joseph D. Baylog and his wife Robin, Carol Miller and her husband Matt all of Forks Twp., PA; a brother: Herbert R. Daws of Nazareth, PA , a granddaughter: Elana Baylog, niece and nephews: Lou, Ed, Joe, Mary Kay and Eric Schultheis.

Services: Will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 9, 2014 Graveside at Easton Heights Cemetery, N.10th St., Easton. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Karen Ann Lohrman

September 8, 2014

Karen Ann Lohrman, 58, of Wilson Borough, PA passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 8, 2014 in Easton Hospital after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born March 1, 1956 in Wilson Borough, she was the daughter of Lester and Helen (Willever) Lohrman of Williams Twp., PA. She was a 1974 graduate of Wilson Area High School and a 1978 graduate of Susquehanna University. She had been the Borough Manager for Wilson Borough for ten years and the Borough secretary for six years. Prior to that she had been in banking.

Karen was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Easton where she was active in the Altar Guild, Daughters of the King and had served on Vestry and was a former Junior Warden. She was a life member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and had played in a local volleyball league for several years.

She is survived by her parents: Lester and Helen; a brother: Greg and his wife Kim of Williams Township; three nephews: Lucas and his wife Nicole of Bushkill Twp., PA, Heath and his wife Aparna of London, England, Nicholas of Hellertown; two great-nieces: Madison and Brynn; and partner: Michael Collins with whom she resided.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 14) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA. The interment will be private in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2014 in Trinity Episcopal Church, 234 Spring Garden St., Easton.

Elizabeth E. “Betty” Stem

Elizabeth E. “Betty” Stem, 87, formerly of Easton and Bethlehem Township, died Sunday, September 7, 2014 in Blough Health Care Center.

Born:  March 14, 1927 in Easton, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Ellen (Laubach) Brewen.

Personal:  Her husband, Jack Stem, died in 1990.  Betty was a secretary for the Easton Area School District for over 20 years and retired in 1989.  She graduated from Wilson High School in 1944.

Memberships:  She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilson Borough, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and she served on the Women’s Board of Easton Hospital.

Survivors:  two sons, Jon W. Stem of Allentown and Jan W. Stem and his wife, Gail of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Lee Ann Scanlon and her husband, Dave of Perkasie; five grandchildren and a great grandson.  Her brother, Joseph Brewen and her sister, Nelda Rapp died earlier.

Services:  9:30 am Wednesday, Sept. 10th in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2115 Washington Blvd., Wilson Borough.  Call from 6 to 7:30 pm Tuesday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.

Julius Celani

Julius Celani, 84, formerly of Perkasie, died Sunday, September 7, 2014 in Easton Nursing Center.

Born:  April 24, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, he was a son of the late Julius Celani, Sr. and Paulina (Iovino) D’eramo.

Personal:  Julius served in the US Navy during the Korean War.

Survivors:  children, Rene King of Huntingdon Valley and Robert Celani of Ridley Park; a brother, Anthony Celani and two grandchildren.  His brother, Mario D’eramo and his sister, Gloria Talbert died earlier.
