Robert Lyons

Robert Lyons, 91, of Easton, died Saturday, September 6, 2014 in Country Meadows, Bethlehem Township.

Born:  March 21, 1923 in Easton, he was a son of the late G. I. Lyons and Sarah (Groh) Lyons.

Personal:  He was a part owner of the family business, G. I. Lyons Floor Covering, Co., Easton that was founded by his father in 1938.  He was married to Anne Snyder-Lyons for 23 years.  His first wife, Harriet (Kaplan) Lyons died in 1982.  He graduated from Easton High School in 1940.  Robert was a Technical Sergeant with the 501st Bombardment Squadron 345th Bombardment Group of the US Army during WWII; awarded the Asian-Pacific Theater Service Medal with 7 Bronze Stars; Victory Medal-Philippines Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star; Air Medal; and Distinguished Unit Badge.

Memberships:  He was a member of B’nai Abraham Synagogue, Wilson Borough and the Jewish Community Center, Easton.

Survivors:  Two daughters, Debra Spero of Las Vegas and Stacy Lyons-Ellison of Brooklyn, NY; a son, Steven Lyons of New York City; a sister, Bayla Cohen; and four grandchildren.  His brother, Joseph Lyons died earlier.

Services:  10:00 am Tuesday, Sept. 9th in B’nai Abraham Synagogue, Wilson Borough.  Interment will be in B’nai Abraham Cemetery, Forks Township.  The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Lynne C. Furtado

Lynne Carol Furtado, 71, of Easton, PA died Friday, September 5, 2014 in Easton Hospital.

Born: September 11, 1942 in Alexandria, VA she was a daughter of the late Alex and Missy Anne (Jones) Van Praag, III.

Personal: She had been employed by Wells Fargo Auto in Allentown for several years.

Survivors: Her daughter: Anne C. Furtado and her husband Matthew Gerrior with whom she resided; 3 brothers: Bruce Van Praag and Achilles Bowen both in California, Drake Van Praag in Oregon and 2 step-grandchildren.

Services: Will be private; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Irving Weitz

September 4, 2014

Irving Weitz, 85, of Bangor, PA formerly of Easton died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014 at Easton Hospital.

Born: September 22, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY he was a son of the late Morris and Anna (Becker) Weitz. His wife, Selma (Baer) Weitz died in 2006 after 55 years of marriage.

Personal: He served in the Army during the Korean War and had been a plant manager in the garment industry for many years before retiring.  He also loved to golf.

Memberships: He had been a member of Bnai Abraham Synagogue and Temple Covenant of Peace in Easton before moving to Florida.

Survivors: Two children: Ann Rider and her husband Bill of North Falmouth, MA; Philip Weitz and his wife Denise of Hilton Head, SC; 6 grandchildren: Nicole Rider Siegel, Jordan Rider, Jonathan Rider, Joshua Weitz, Matthew Weitz and Nicholas Weitz.

Dorothy J. "Dot" Mack

Dorothy J. “Dot” Mack, 92, of Bethlehem Twp. PA died Sunday, August 31, 2014 at the Hospice House of St. Luke’s VNA.

Born: June 1, 1922 in Jersey Shore, PA she was a daughter of the late William Leland and Alma Viola (Long) Mahaffey. Her husband Donald F. Mack died in 2010.

Personal: She had been employed by Bell Telephone in Williamsport for more than 20 years. During WWII she worked in an aircraft engine assembly plant.

Memberships: She was a tithing member of the Palmer Moravian Church.

Survivors: Her son: David B. Mack and his wife Linda of Bethlehem Twp., PA; her granddaughter: Kristin Mooney and her great-grandson: Kieran Mooney of Virginia Beach, VA. She was predeceased by her husband Donald F., her daughter Linda L. Barnard and her twin brother: William Leland Mahaffey, Jr. who died during WWII.

Services:  Will be private; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Janice Ellen Baty

August 30, 2014

Janice Ellen Baty, of Easton, departed this life at age 88 on Saturday evening August 30, 2014 at Manor Care of Easton.

Born: Born April 21, 1926 in Easton, she was a daughter of the late Ida Mae (Stark) Wyant. Her husband Philip L. Baty died in 1989.

Personal: A longtime resident of Wilson Borough, she was a homemaker and later worked for home health care organizations.

Memberships: Janice was a lifelong member of Green Pond United Methodist Church, formerly Calvary UM in Easton and was a 1944 graduate of Easton High School.

Survivors: She is survived by her son David L. Baty and his wife Linda of Lynchburg, VA; three grandchildren: Jamison David Baty and wife Elisabeth of Charlottesville, VA; Lauren Baty Clark and husband Norman of Madison Heights, VA; and Daniel Eliot Baty and wife Amie of Chesapeake, VA and six great-grandchildren: Jackson, Braedon, Gavin, Cassidy, and Logan Clark, all of Madison Heights, VA, Brooke Baty of Chesapeake, VA and a beloved friend and caregiver for several years, Lauretta Post of Easton.

Services: Will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday (Sept.4) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

Nanette L. Jones

Nanette L. Jones, 74, of Easton, died Tuesday, August 26, 2014 in Moravian Village, Bethlehem.

Born:  December 13, 1939 in Easton, she was a daughter of the late James and Helen (Augustine) Hanlon.

Personal:  She and her husband, Thomas M. Jones were married 25 years.  Nanette was a Department Manager for A&P and Superfresh until retiring.  Prior to that she worked for Binney & Smith and Mack Printing.  Through all her 74 years on Earth, and many more, this sweetly naïve girl and lovingly strong sister, mother, aunt, nana and friend is, and will be, preciously remembered by all whose lives she touched.

Survivors:  husband, Thomas; children, John Pelliciotta and his wife, Nikki of Washington; Sondi Stocker and her husband, Earl of Easton; Philip Virgilio and his wife, Lisa of Easton; sisters, Helene Pursel and her husband, John of Cape May Beach, NJ; MaryEllen Orloski and her husband, Walter of Quakertown; brothers, Richard Hanlon and his wife, Honey of Florida; Bernard Hanlon and his wife, Sara of Texas; 7 grandchildren; 1 great grandson and nieces and nephews.  Her brother, Jim Hanlon died June 2013.

Helen M. Vasvari

Helen M. Vasvari, 92, formerly of Palmer Twp., PA died Monday, August 25, 2014 at Old Orchard Manor Care, Bethlehem Twp., PA

Born: August 26, 1921 in Easton, PA she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Marie (Brogan) Powell. Her husband Harold L. Vasvari died in 2011.

Personal: Helen was a graduate of Easton HS, Class of 1939. She and her husband owned and operated Webster’s Restaurant in the Palmer Mall in the 1980’s. She had worked for many years at the Easton Sweet Shop, in Centre Square, Easton. She was loved by all that had the pleasure of sharing life with her. She was full of unconditional love for everyone, especially children and animals. She was a true angel to many.

Memberships: Helen was a loyal member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Easton.

Survivors: 2 sons: Hal “Skip” Vasvari and his wife Colette of Nazareth, PA, Richard Vasvari and his wife Verdi of Whitehall; 6 grandsons: Todd, Chris, Sean, Brett, Jon and Jan; 4 great-grandsons: Bryce, Brady, Cade and Liam; 2 sisters: Lorraine Donnerstod and Irene Dileo and beloved nephew: John Ruvolis. She was predeceased by her husband Harold and siblings: Rosemary Sandt and Anthony Powell, Jr.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 28) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, with visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

My Nhan Thi Nguyen

My Nhan Thi Nguyen, 35, of Easton, died Thursday, August 21, 2014.

Born:  February 11, 1979 in Vietnam, she was a daughter of Ven Van Nguyen and Giang Thi (Tran) Nguyen.

Personal:  She was a graduate of University of California, Berkeley and attended Soul Winners Pentecostal Church, Wilson Borough.

Survivors:  In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Hieu Nguyen.
