Peter Socrates Zavitsanos, 97 of Wilson Borough, PA died Monday, July 17, 2023 at home. Born September 30, 1925 in Newport News, VA, he was the son of the late Socrates and Angelica (Xanthopoulos) Zavitsanos. He attended schools in Newport News, the College of Hampton Roads, William and Mary and the Air Mechanic School in NC. He served in the Army Air Force 730th Air Warning Co., China, Burma, India during WWII, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon and WWII Victory Ribbon. Peter retired from Northampton County as a Correctional Officer in 1991. Prior to that he was employed by MC Riccardi Co., Ingersoll-Rand and the Navy Hydro Graphic Office in MD. He was a life member of American Legion, Post 9, Citizen’s Hose, VFW Post 4366, and the Wilson Republican Club. Pete was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Wilson where he served as Secretary on the Board of Trustees and was a life member and past president of Eastonia Chapter 56, Order of AHEPA serving as its secretary since 1954.

He is survived by his daughters: Katherine Vayda (James Vannatta) of Williams Twp., PA, Athena Gilio (Michael Gilio) of Breinigsville, PA; 3 grandchildren: Melissa Tripp (Christopher Tripp), David Gilio and Christopher Gilio; and 3 great-grandchildren: Christopher, Matthew and Dominic. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Xanthe (Karanikas) in 2016 and his sister Katherine Pappas.

Services are 1 PM Saturday (July22) in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 319 S. 20th St., Easton, with visitation noon to 1 PM in the church. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton, PA is handling arrangements. Interment is in Gethsemane Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society (c/o the church) in memory of his wife.
