Dr. Sherman “Doc” Ames, II, V.M.D., of Stewartsville, NJ, left us on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at Lopatcong Care Center, just five days shy of his 91st birthday.

He was a 1941 graduate of Easton High School, where he was class president and valedictorian of his class. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the swim team and Theta Xi Fraternity.
His education was interrupted when he enlisted in the Navy Air Corps to become a pilot in World War II, following which he attended the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1950 with the degree of V.M.D.
After a year of internship in Bedford, PA, he returned to join his father in the practice of veterinary medicine in Easton, treating both large and small animals, including such diverse sizes as an ermine and an elephant. Notable in his career was the publication in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association of his article describing a novel surgical procedure he originated for the correction of a twisted stomach in cows. He retired in 1998. During all this time, he maintained his flight status in the United States Navy Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant commander.

Thinking of you and sending sincere sympathy to Betsy, Eleta, and the entire Ames family. I have fond memories of times spent at your vibrant home and of a loving husband, father, and skilled, hardworking veterinarian. Among my many memories is that of Dr. Ames toasting his wife at the start of a great meal. May your own happy memories provide comfort at this time of loss.

I was sad to hear about Sherm’s passing and am thinking of the entire family. I have such fond memories of times spent at your house when I was a kid. I loved to hear my Dad’s stories about Sherm. May fond memories, the love and support of family and friends, and the beauty of nature help you find peace in your hearts.

Thank you, Betsy, for your note to Lois, who at 90 (next month) is experiencing moderate to severe senility and might not be able to respond to you. We are very sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Ames. I will share your note and the obit on this website with her and see whether she is able to respond to you in person. She is being looked after by me (her son Richard) and her daughter (Carol Schreiber). Both of us live close by University Village where Lois lives and visit with her many times per week. She is happy and well, other than her increasing mental inabilities. On her behalf (and our families) I’m sure she would want me to send you our heartfelt condolences. -Richard “Rick” Newsham
