Blanche Friedman Kaduk

Blanche F. Kaduk, 96, formerly of Palmer Township, PA died Monday, February 17, 2014 at Westminster Village in Allentown. 

Born Nov. 1, 1917 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Stella (Rosenfeldt) Friedman, who moved as Hungarian immigrants, with their young family, to Easton in 1924.  They purchased King’s Cleaners and Dyers from the estate of the late William King who had started the business in 1868.  It was located at 225 Ferry St. 

Personal: She attended Easton High School, the Budapest Conservatory of Music in Hungary and Churchman’s Business School.  Blanche married Arthur Kaduk in 1941.  They both became associated with the family business at this time and started a 63 year journey in the dry cleaning business.  In 1969 they became sole owners of Kings Cleaners,  by now one of the mainstays of downtown Easton. Blanche loved books and reading.  She enjoyed playing bridge and golf and was a former member of the Berkleigh Golf Club.  She also enjoyed cooking recipes of her Hungarian heritage.

Memberships: She was a member of the Temple Covenant of Peace, Wilson Borough for more than eight decades; a member of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley and a life member of Hadassah.  

Survivors: Her husband of 73 years:  Arthur R.; daughter: Betsy; son: Bruce and his wife: Cecilia of Montville, NJ; nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by two brothers:  Alfred Friedman and Dr. George Friedman.

Services: Will be held 11 AM Thursday (Feb. 20) in the Temple Covenant of Peace, 15th and Northampton Sts., Easton, with a Meal of Consolation following the interment in Easton Cemetery. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Livingston W. “Smitty” Smith

February 14, 2014

Livingston W. “Smitty” Smith, 85, of Plainfield Township, died Friday, February 14, 2014 in his home.

Born:  June 15, 1928 in Pen Argyl, he was a son of the late Frank and Edith (Raeder) Smith.

Personal:  He served in the Army and the Navy during WWII and he worked at Taylor-Wharton, Palmer Township for many years.

Memberships:  Smitty was a member of the Order of Fleas, Easton.

Survivors:  His companion, Betty Jane Todd; two sons, Kirk Smith and David Smith; a daughter, Valerie Derr; a brother, Robert Smith; 4 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

Services:  Services will be private.  Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.  The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Charles S. Smith, Esq.

Charles S. Smith, Esq., 89, of Forks Twp., PA died Tuesday, February 11, 2014 in Moravian Hall Square, Nazareth, PA.

Born: November 17, 1924 in Easton, he was a son of the late Walter G. and Hetty K. (Slack) Smith.

Personal: A graduate of Girard College in Philadelphia, Lafayette College and Duke University School of Law, Atty. Smith practiced law in the Easton area for more than 50 years. He was one of the Founders and Incorporators of the State Theatre in Easton receiving an Award, this past year, presented by the Mayor of Easton for his efforts in saving and founding the Theatre. He also received recognition from Palmer Twp., for his more than 45 years as Solicitor for the Palmer Sewer Authority. He had been Solicitor for Forks Twp. and for their Sewer Authority as well. He was a WWII Army veteran who served in the 1st Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Memberships: He was a Past-President of: the Northampton County Bar Assoc.; Easton Area Chamber of Commerce; Lehigh Valley Cancer Society; Easton Area Jaycees; and Easton Lions Club. He was a Past Vice-President of the Pomfret Club; a Delegate to the PA Bar Association Committee for review of candidates for appellate court; a former chairman of PA Bar Assoc. Committee on Government Regulation of the Practice of Law; and a life member of the PA Bar Foundation. He was also a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilson; Masonic Lodge #152, F&AM and NEBO Hunting Club.

Survivors: His wife of 61 years, the former Margaret Kohl; his son: Craig J. Smith, Esq. (who was a law partner with his father for 22 years) and his wife Leigh of Stockton, NJ; his daughter: Valerie A. Legath of Forks Twp.; 4 grandsons: Thomas J. and Steven M. Legath and Craig J., Jr. and Lloyd Charles Smith. He was predeceased by a brother: John H. Smith.

Services: A viewing will be held this Sunday (Feb. 16) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton with a Memorial Service to be held Feb. 22 at 1:00 p.m. in Moravian Hall Square, Kortz Hall, 175 W. North St., Nazareth, PA. Interment will be private.

Memorials: May be made to the Good Samaritan Fund, c/o Moravian Hall Square; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Easton or a charity of one’s choice.

Patricia E. Caplette

February 3, 2014

Patricia E. Caplette, 79, of Elizabeth, NJ, died Monday, February 3, 2014 in Moravian Hall Square, Nazareth.

Born:  February 23, 1934 in Elizabeth, NJ, she was the daughter of the late George P. and Esther (Bolger) Rabig.

Survivors:  Her son, Robert P. Caplette and his wife, Deborah of Forks Township; and three grandchildren, Robby of Indianapolis, Trevor of Forks Township, and Lorenna of Forks Township.  Her husband, Robert A. Caplette and her daughter, Mary Ellen Caplette died earlier.

Services:  10:30 am Friday, Feb. 7 in St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church, 4049 Hartley Ave., Palmer Township.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm Thursday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.

Elaine E. Haney

February 3, 2014

Elaine E. Haney, 71, of Easton died Monday, February 3 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Anderson Campus.

Born: October 8, 1942 in Easton she was a daughter of the late Robert and Doris (Foster) Stroble. Her husband John “Catfish” Haney, III died in 1998.

Personal: She had been employed by Gracedale for 27 years, as a School Crossing Guard in Easton for many years and had been active in the PTA. She was a devout Christian who read her Bible and believed in giving to other

Survivors: Her son: John J., IV, of Easton; brother: Robert Stroble of Palmer Twp.; sister: Nancy Halley of Easton and a grandson: Johnathan. She was predeceased by her daughter: Tammie and a sister Cindy Walters.

Services: Will be at the convenience of the family. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Jean L. Booser

January 31, 2014

Jean L. Booser, 88, formerly of Penbrook, PA died Friday, January 31, 2014 in Gracedale Nursing Home, Nazareth.

Born:  December 27, 1925 in Harrisburg, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Florence E. (Meredith) Etzweiler.

Personal:  Her husband, John Richard “Dick” Booser died in 2007.  She graduated from John Harris High School where she excelled in archery.  She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed vacationing in Atlantic City and Virginia Beach.

Memberships:  Jean was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Penbrook; the Termites Club; and the Penbrook Swim Club.

Survivors:  A son, Richard W. “Rick” Booser and his wife, Elizabeth of Martins Creek; four grandchildren, Eric, Kate, Kyle, and Ethan; and a great granddaughter.

Services:  11:00 am Friday (Feb. 7) in the church, 2730 Booser Ave, Penbrook.  A visitation will be held from 10:30 am until service time Friday in the church.  Interment will be in East Harrisburg Cemetery. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Sidney Golden

January 27, 2014

Sidney Golden, 83, of Wilson Borough, PA died Monday, January 27, 2014 in ManorCare Health Services, Palmer Twp., PA

Personal: Born March 12, 1930 in Phillipsburg, NJ, he was a graduate of Phillipsburg HS (‘48) and East Stroudsburg University. He received his Master’s Degree from Lehigh University and was an elementary school teacher for the Bethlehem School District for many years before retiring.  An avid sports fan, he especially loved following local high school sports and was a ticket taker for Easton HS for many years. He also enjoyed participating in flea markets and was a member of the local Democratic Party.

Survivors: He is survived by a cousin. He was predeceased by his parents: Max Goldowitz, Ida (Jacobs) Goldowitz Miller and step-father: Morris Miller.

Services: 2:00 p.m. Friday (Jan. 31) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton. Interment will be Children of Israel Cemetery, Forks Twp., PA.

Judd H. Deutsch

January 26, 2014

Judd H. Deutsch, 58, of Palmer Twp., PA died Sunday, January 26, 2014 at home. He had been on a heart and kidney transplant list.

Born: April 13, 1955 in Easton, PA he was a son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Schippers) Deutsch.

Personal: A 1973 graduate of Easton High School, he had been employed by Bethlehem Steel and Sacred Heart Hospital. He enjoyed art, ceramics, and he especially loved antique cars.

Memberships: He was a member of Arndt’s Lutheran Church, Forks Twp., PA.

Survivors:  His wife of 33 years: Nancy G. (Young) Deutsch; his son: Joseph G. Deutsch of Wilson Borough, PA; his daughter: Allison A. Deutsch of Palmer Twp., PA and his sister: Bonnie Khavaran of Strongsville, OH.

Services: 10 AM Friday (Jan. 31) in Arndt’s Lutheran Church, 1851 Arndt Road, Easton, PA with a calling period from 6:30 to 8 PM  Thursday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton, PA. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery.
