Mary V. Burpee

Mary V. Burpee, 96, of Palmer Twp. died Thursday, February 21, 2013 in Siemon Lakeview Manor in Somerset, PA.

Born: April 20, 1916 in Pawtucket, RI she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Catherine Murray Kapel.  Her husband, Royal H. Burpee, Jr.  died in 2004.

Personal: She had been an Arthur Murray dance instructor and a bookkeeper at Feins Furniture in Providence, RI.  She had also volunteered at The Easton Home.

Memberships: She was a longtime, active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Easton where she served on the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the URW Club.

Survivors: A loving wife, mother and nana, she is survived by: her children: Royal “Roy” Burpee, III and his wife Kathy of Easton; Diane Brant and her husband Tom of Somerset; a brother: John Kapel of Warwick, RI; 5 grandchildren: Joshua Parke and his wife Maria; Zachary Parke and his wife Nicole; Caitlin Callahan and her husband Michael; Margaret Burpee and Gregory Burpee; and 2 great-grandchildren: Addison and Ethan. She was predeceased by a sister Margie Ricci.

Services: Will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (2/26) in Trinity Episcopal Church, 234 Spring Garden St., Easton with visitation from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton. Interment will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

Stanton W. “Stan” Sutphen

Stanton W. “Stan” Sutphen, 78, of Easton, died Saturday, February 16, 2013 in Phoebe Home, Allentown.

Born:  June 30, 1934 in Easton, he was a son of the late F. Sherman and Edith (Godley) Sutphen.

Personal:  Stan was the basketball coach and an English and journalism teacher at Easton Area High School for over 30 years until retiring.  He also was a manager at Eddyside Beach where he organized the basketball league.  He graduated cum laude from Wyoming Seminary, received his bachelor’s degree from Lafayette College and his master’s degree from Lehigh University.  He served in the Army and was named the Teacher of the Year in 1991 by the Easton Schoolmen’s Association.

Memberships:  Stan was a past-president of the Easton Jaycees, a director of the Easton P.A.L, a vice-president of the Easton Citizen’s Advisory Committee, a board member of Nor-Car Federal Credit Union and a member of the YR Club.

Survivors:  A son, Greg S. Sutphen of Allentown; a daughter, Tricia R. Dougherty and her husband, Rusty of Nazareth and three grandchildren, Laura Sutphen and Billy and Megan Dougherty.  His sister, Emily Guignet died earlier.

Services:  Will be held 7:00 p.m. Friday (2/22) in the Easton Area High School gymnasium, 2601 William Penn Highway, Easton with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Elaine Victor Stettz

Elaine Victor Stettz, 78, of Easton, died Saturday, February 16, 2013.

Born:  October 26, 1934 in Olyphant, PA, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Mary (Kosydar) Victor.

Personal:  Her husband, Stanley E. Stettz died in 1998. Elaine graduated from Olyphant High School in 1952.  She was trained as a Registered Nurse at Scranton State General Hospital and worked at the Little Flower Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

Memberships:  She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Survivors:  Two daughters, Susan Rambo of Bethlehem Township and Melanie Stettz of Sandy Spring, MD; a brother, Stanley Victor of Palmer Township; two sisters, Ann Victor of White Plains, NY and Louise Wastak of Fort Myers, FL and 5 grandchildren.

Services:  10:00 am Tuesday in Our Lady of Mercy, St. Bernard’s Oratory, 132 S. 5th St., Easton.  Interment in Gethsemane Cemetery. Call from 6 – 7:30 pm Monday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.

Ruth Forsythe

Ruth Forsythe

Ruth Forsythe, 90, of Wilson Borough, died Saturday, February 16, 2013 in Easton Hospital.

Born:  August 20, 1922 in Lafayette Township, NJ.

Personal:  Ruth was the head nurse at the Bailey Health Center, Lafayette College for over 40 years and retired in 1990. She graduated from Washington High School in 1940 and received her Registered Nurse Degree from the Easton Hospital School of Nursing in 1943.  She was a former president of the American Business Women’s Association, Easton and was a volunteer for the Red Cross during WWII.

Memberships:  Ruth was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Easton.

Survivors:  A sister, Hazel L. Werkheiser of Plainfield Township; a nephew, Craig M. Werkheiser of Plainfield Township; a niece, Janice L. Melmed of Maine and 2 great nephews, Gabriel and Garvey.

Services:  Services will be private.  The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Elmer C. Lambert

Elmer C. Lambert, 73, of Northampton, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Muhlenberg.

Born:  January 15, 1940 in Bangor, he was a son of the late Elmer E. and Dortha E. (Hopper) Lambert.

Personal:  He managed several movie theaters in the Lehigh Valley including the State Theatre, Easton, the Roxy Theatre, Northampton and the Eric Theatre, Allentown.  He graduated from Wilson High School in 1957 and served in the Army and OSS during the Vietnam War. He was also an avid bowler at Bar-Don Lanes, Easton.

Survivors:  A brother, Charles Lambert and his wife LaMay of Whitehall; 3 sisters, Joyous Love and her husband, Jack of British Columbia; Dortha Ryerson of Palmer Township and Dianne Heater of Wilson Borough. A brother, Vernon Lambert and a sister, Lois Christian died earlier.

Services:  10:30 am Wednesday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.  Call from 7 – 8:30 pm Tuesday in the funeral home.

Harry H. Kelly

Harry H. Kelly, 86, of Palmer Township, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 in ManorCare, Old Orchard.

Born:  February 7, 1927 in Easton, he was a son of the late Clifton D. and Florence E. (Wasser) Kelly.

Personal:  His wife, the former Evelyn Hawkins died in 2001.  Harry drove a delivery truck for the former Schaible’s Bakery, Wilson Borough and served in the Army during WWII.

Memberships:  He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Easton.

Survivors:  Three grandchildren, Shawn Kelly and his fiancé Shane; Kevin Kelly and Katie Kelly and a great grandson, Logan.  His son, John D. Kelly and his daughter, Judy M. Kelly died earlier.

Services:  Services will be private.  The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

William R. Marley

William R. Marley, 87, of Easton died Tuesday, February, 12, 2013 in Easton Hospital.

Born: January 28, 1926 in Jackson, MS, he was a son of the late William and Geral  Marley.

Personal: A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and Louisiana State University, he was an author, playwright and artist. Several of his plays were produced and performed both locally and in regional theatre throughout the country, winning several awards. He had also been a Color Design Director and served in the Navy during WWII.

Memberships: He was awarded lifetime membership to the Color Marketing Group and was very active in the local arts community serving as an evaluator for the Freddy Awards.

Survivors: His friend and companion: Angel Suarez-Rosado; a sister: Adele Mize of Jackson, MS; nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a sister Marie.

Services: A calling period will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday (2/18) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 14th and Northampton Sts., Easton.

Helen C. Schaffer

Helen C. Schaffer, 97, of Wilson Borough, died Monday, February 11, 2013 in Easton Hospital.

Born:  October 17, 1915 in Richlandtown, PA, she was a daughter of the late Titus and Mamie (Trumbower) Crouthamel.

Personal:  Her husband, Luther J. Schaffer died in 1976.  She worked for the JoAnn Dress Co., Easton.

Survivors:  A son, Gerald Schaffer of Hellertown; two daughters, Louise Fisher of Nazareth and Florence Bateman of Wilson Borough; a sister, Iva Moyer; 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.  A grandson died earlier.

Services:  10:00 am Friday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton.  Interment in Hope Cemetery, Hecktown.
