Nancy Shetenhelm Marshall, 81, of Easton, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, at home surrounded by family and loved ones.
She was born on December 16, 1944 in Orange, California, United States. She was the daughter of Philip and Blanche (Archer) Shetenhelm.
Nancy received a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1966 and a Master of Counseling Psychology from Kutztown University in 1994.
Nancy lived and worked in New York City from 1967 – 1986 as a painter, an advertising designer and film animator. After moving to Easton, PA in 1986, she had second career as a counselor. She first worked for organizations and agencies, including Northampton County Children and Youth, KidsPeace, the Visiting Nurses Association, the Domestic Abuse and Rape Crisis Center, and Pinebrook Family Answers. In time, she entered private practice and became one of the region’s first practitioners of EMDR, work she continued until very shortly before her death. One of her proudest legacies was her work over the years helping hundreds of clients address and resolve trauma and reclaim their lives.
Nancy is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Walp, son-in-law David, her granddaughter Cynthia, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Maria, and former husband, Norman.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Nancy’s honor to the Lehigh Valley Chorale (www.lvchorale.org). Condolences may be shared with the family at elizabeth.marshall.walp@gmail.com.
On Sunday, July 12, Connexions Gallery will host an event celebrating Nancy’s life and work, including a retrospective featuring a wide selection of her artwork from over the decades. Missing her so much and remembering so many moments of our friendship and colleagueship. Once we were on a panel together after The Vagina Monologues. She was so fun, so open, so “lively” (one of her words). The last time I saw her she was jamming out to Barry Manilow, which I did mock her for. Miss you girl!

I worked with Nancy for several years and I thought she was wonderful. I remember one time she randomly brought me flowers for no reason. She will be missed.

Nancy was a uniquely gifted therapist. Extremely caring, knowledgeable, competent and everything you could want in a trauma based clinician. We lost touch after she retired but I feel lucky to have known her and worked with her. My condolences to her family and friends.

I knew Nancy as a wonderful, wise counseling colleague whom I first crossed paths with in grad school at KU. Came across her again years later by way of Anne C. She was funny, warm, and intuitive, and I admired her for many other reasons as well. My condolences to all her friends and family…she will be missed! ❤️
