Daniel Hertz

Daniel Hertz, 93, formerly of Easton and Tannersville, died April 8, 2014 at his home in Lauderhill, FL.

Born: in New York City, he was a son of the late Emil and Dora Hertz.  He and his wife Marilyn have been married for 67 years.

Personal: When he was 18, his family moved to Bangor and later to Pen Argyl.  He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942, serving 3 ½ years.  He was a Sergeant in the 796th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, attached to the 10th Armored Division of Patton’s Third Army in Europe.  He was Chief of his battalion’s message center, which sorted and delivered mail and verbal messages and operated the cryptography machine.  They participated in three major campaigns: The Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes), The Rhineland, and Central Europe. He married Marilyn in 1947, learned to ski on his honeymoon in the Canadian Laurentians, and then settled in Easton.  His love of skiing started his involvement in the ski industry beginning in 1958.  He was a ski patrolman at Big Boulder and Buck Hill Ski Areas, a ski instructor at Camelback Ski Area, and the Ski Patrol Leader at Timber Hill Ski Area (now Alpine Mt.).  He was also president of the Poco Ski Club in Easton. As a Ski-School Supervisor at Big Boulder and Camelback Ski Areas, he earned national recognition for organizing a program, which ran from 1967 through 1980, qualifying Boy Scouts who wished to earn their Skiing Merit Badge. Within the first few years of the program, he was informed by The Boy Scouts of America that he had qualified more scouts for the skiing merit badge than any other individual in the United States and was featured in an article in Scouting Magazine in 1971. He is going to be inducted into the Pennsylvania Ski Hall of Fame later this year. From 1974 until 1980, he was also a real-estate developer and a broker at Kohler-Marvin Realty. Before retiring, he worked as the Administrative Manager for night skiing at Camelback Ski Area from 1980 to 1993.

Memberships: Before moving to Florida, he had been a member of the Temple Covenant of Peace, Easton, and Temple Israel, Stroudsburg.  He belonged to the Pen Argyl American Legion and VFW.

Survivors: Wife: Marilyn; daughter: Leslie Stine and her husband James of Pocono Pines; two sons: Ronald and his wife Debbie Messling of Bethlehem, Gerald and his wife Jessica Waldman of Boulder, CO; a grandson: Shiloh and a granddaughter: Ilana, both of Boulder, CO; two brothers: Mortimer of Delray Beach, FL and Robert of Ft. Myers, FL.  Sisters: Blanche Berman and Ruth Ravitz died previously.

Services: 2 PM Sunday (Apr. 13) in Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton (at the corner of 14th and Northampton Sts.) Interment will be in the B’nai Abraham Cemetery, Forks Township, PA.

Memorials: May be made to the USO or charity of one’s choice.

Caren A. Campbell

April 4, 2014

Caren A. Campbell, 45, of Easton, PA died Friday, April 4, 2014 at New Eastwood in Wilson Borough.

Born: July 19, 1968 in St. Ann, Jamaica she was a daughter of Sexton Campbell and Elsweta Gordon. Her adoptive parents are Matthew and Betty Randolph.

Personal: She had been employed by the Giant Supermarket, Amazon Co. and Chubb Ins. for many years.

Survivors: Her parents; many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews.

Services: 9 AM Saturday (Apr. 12) in Olivet Presbyterian Church, 1151 Northampton St., Easton, PA with a calling period prior to the service; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Interment will be in South Easton Cemetery.

Arthur R. Kaduk

April 4, 2014

Arthur Kaduk, 94, formerly of Palmer Twp. died April 4, 2014 in his home at Moravian Village, Bethlehem.  

Born: February 29, 1920 in White Plains, NY he was the son of the late Chonel and Ethel (Magid) Kaduk. His wife of 72 years Blanche (Friedman) Kaduk died in February.

Personal: A 1937 graduate of Ellenville HS, NY he came to Easton in 1941 when he married Blanche and became associated with King’s Cleaners, a downtown Easton family owned business since 1924.  Arthur was drafted into the US Army in 1942 and served his country honorably for three years overseas where he was involved in the installation of military dry cleaning plants all over Europe. In 1969, he and his wife became the sole owners of King’s Cleaners. By this time, King’s was one of the long-established businesses in Easton.  Arthur attended the National Institute of Dry Cleaning in Silver Springs, MD and enjoyed learning about and implementing the latest dry cleaning technology.  He derived much satisfaction from providing high quality service to his customers, with whom he established many long term relationships over the years. Arthur enjoyed reading, in particular, biographies, history and current events.  He was an avid golfer who played at the Berkleigh Golf Club for many years and later at the Hunter’s Run Golf Club in Boynton Beach, FL.

Memberships: Arthur was a member of Temple Covenant of Peace, Easton for more than 70 years and served on its Board of Trustees.  He was also a member of the Easton Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and Dallas-Lafayette Lodge #396, F.&A.M.

Survivors: His daughter Betsy of Easton, son Bruce and daughter-in-law Cecilia of Montville, NJ; nieces and nephews.  His wife: Blanche, 2 brothers and a sister died earlier.  

Services: 11 AM Monday (Apr.7) in Temple Covenant of Peace, 15th and Northampton Sts., Easton; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements. Interment will be in Easton Cemetery.

Memorials: May be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Albert W. Kuebler

April 4, 2014

Albert W. Kuebler, 82, of Easton, PA died Friday, April 4, 2014 at Easton Hospital.

Born: Nov. 17, 1931 in Easton, PA he was a son of the late Albert E. and Edna (Gledhill) Kuebler. His wife of 47 years, the former Janice C. Kehler died Oct. 10, 2003.

Personal: He was a graduate of Easton High School, Class of 1949 and Churchman’s Business School in Easton.  He had been employed by Eisenhardt Mills, Inc. as an Accountant and Purchasing agent for 38 years before retiring in 1996.  After retiring he was a Realtor with Century 21 McPeek Agency, Inc. for many years.  Albert was an Army veteran of the Korean War.    

Memberships: He was a lifetime member of the First United Church of Christ of Easton.  Albert was also a member of Dallas-Lafayette Lodge #396 F. & A.M. and a former member of Dallas Lodge #396 F. & A.M. where he served as Treasurer for 13 years.  He was a member of the Young Republican Club of Easton where he served as President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Survivors: Two daughters, Beth Kuebler and her husband Marty Varvel of East Stroudsburg PA, Laurie Palmer and her husband Richard of Mercerville, NJ; two grandsons: Andrew and Christopher Palmer.  Three sisters: Mary Suess, Gretchen Finken, and Arlene Specht all died earlier.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (Apr. 8) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 14th and Northampton Sts., Easton with visitation 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday  in the funeral home followed by a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Northampton Memorial Shrine.

Memorials: May be made to American Diabetes Assn. or American Heart Assn.

Jo Ann Reed

Jo Ann Reed, 54, of Easton, PA died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at New Eastwood, Wilson Borough, PA.

Born: August 12, 1959 in Glendon, PA she was a daughter of the late Nathaniel Reiss and Joan Stoneback.

Personal: She had been a dispatcher for the Easton Taxi Company.

Survivors: Three sons: Todd Conover, George Reed and Robert Reed all of Easton and 4 grandchildren.

Services: Are at the convenience of family; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.

Marjorie Joan “Mickey” Miller

Marjorie Joan “Mickey” Miller, 74, of Forks Twp., PA formerly of Cranford, NJ died Tuesday, March 25, 2014 in the Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital.

Born: August 22, 1939 in Jersey City, NJ she was a daughter of the late James and Lillian (Maxwell) Griffen. She and her husband Charles T. Miller have been married for 49 years.

Personal: A graduate of Lincoln HS, Jersey City, she had been employed by the Union County Savings and Loan for 10 years. She was also a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack #103 in Cranford for 20 years and an avid crafter.

Memberships: She was a member of Arndts Lutheran Church, Forks Twp., PA and she had been a member of the Altar Guild and a Sunday School teacher at Calvary Lutheran Church in Cranford, NJ.

Survivors: Her husband: Charles; 2 sons: Charles M. and his wife Maureen of Cherry Hill, NJ; Scott A. and his wife Denise of Manahawkin, NJ; 2 brothers; 3 sisters; and 6 grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

Services: 11 AM Saturday (Mar. 29) in Arndts Lutheran Church, 1851 Arndt Road, Easton with visitation 6 to 8 PM Friday in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton and 10 to 11AM Saturday in the Church.

Frances M. Gassaway

March 25, 2014

Frances “Fran” Michler Gassaway of Bethlehem, PA died Tuesday, March 25, 2014 in Manor Care, Old Orchard.

Born: In Easton she was a daughter of the late Frank and Edna (Applebaugh) Michler. Her husband D. Earle Gassaway died in 1986.

Personal: She was a graduate of Easton High School. Prior to marriage, she was a private secretary to the chief engineer of the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. She also enjoyed a part-time career modeling for various Easton department stores. After moving to New York City, she became the executive secretary to the president of a publishing company. She and her husband moved to Bethlehem in 1976. Fran touched many lives along life’s journey. She was a loyal friend to those who had the privilege of knowing her, and she will be missed by each and every one.

Survivors: Nephew: Bill Gassaway, great-niece: Linda Dunivin; and great-nephew: Fred Gassaway; and close friends.

Services: Friends may gather at 9:30 a.m. Monday (Mar. 31) in the Ashton Funeral Home, 1337 Northampton St., Easton. A service will follow at 10 AM in Easton Cemetery.

Marion Virginia Rice

March 25, 2014

Marion Virginia Rice, 96, formerly of Easton, PA died Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Westminster Village, Allentown, PA.

Born: October 28, 1917 in Easton, PA she was a daughter of the late G. Howard and Helen (Laubach) Drake. She was predeceased by husbands: Henry Eichlin and Robert Rice.

Personal: A graduate of Easton High School, she had been employed by Mack Printing in Wilson for many years before retiring.

Survivors: Daughter-in-law: Mary Elizabeth Eichlin of Easton; grandchildren: Valerie Paul of Hampton, VA, Lauri Henninger of Kunkletown, PA, Mark Eichlin of Easton, Robin Hahn of Nazareth, PA , Eric Eichlin of Gilbert, AZ and Karl Eichlin of Citrus Heights, CA. She was a loving great grandmother to 16 and a great-great grandmother to 4. She also embraced many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren from combined family unions. She was predeceased by sons: Robert Eichlin, Thomas Eichlin and step-sons: Robert Rice and Larry Rice.

Services: Will be private; the Ashton Funeral Home, Easton is handling the arrangements.
